I bet if them guns belonged to a LEO same scenario the outcome would be very different than 000buck's outcome. Not likely as most of us have the good sense to have serial numbers recorded someplace. LEOs are no different than any other profession. Most are really good, a few are excellent, but there are some bad ones. The best ones are following a calling and get paid no where near what they are worth. God bless those. The only problem is that the bad LEO has the ability to ruin lives. The bad Walmart cashier might ruin your day. The consequences are too high to tolerate bad LEO'S but the profession still has plenty. A good psych evaluation would virtually eliminate the types not suited for the job but they don't want to spare the expense. The expense of continuing to allow those with little man syndrome and the thug mentality is much higher than the expense of weeding them out on the front end, Imo. We gave our guys top notch psych evals by one of the top in his field and some still slipped through the cracks. I have no idea how, but they did.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Jawbone your being more concerned about an old man not having serial numbers on his guns and not the fact that nothing is/can be done to punish the thief, is what makes me and you different. But each to his own is what I say. It’s not what you know but what you can prove…. Guess so

Well for one thing, if not enough evidence aka serial numbers the DA may choose not to prosecute.

Dang this went off the rails. There is no law that says you have to have serial numbers. I do defense. If the owner can identify the guns being pawned on video it’s a case. With that being said i would never expect this kind of bs being said about law enforcement on this site. Every county deputy I know is way underpaid and does his job to the best of his ability. They are the good guys not the perfect guys.

It was stated that without the serial numbers some departments use it as an excuse not to pursue investigations which in many cases, you are correct, other identifying characteristics could determine ownership of the firearms. It’s a shame those departments don’t do everything in their power to investigate and get the weapons back to the rightful owners.

Yall do realize that what most police departments pay officers? That’s the root of the problem.

000Buck I do not doubt you one bit about the guy stealing your grandpa’s guns but how do you know beyond a shadow of doubt that those guns were the guns you’re talking about? Justice is supposed to be blind and even the worst of society in America are considered innocent until proven guilty. You my friend cannot prove anything without evidence of the numbers on the guns or some specific identifying marks. Ever watched Shooter? His firing pin did not work. I take my guns apart and put specific numbers on them. Sad state that we live in now and no your grandpa did not live in a time like we do. A man’s word was gold back then but now dust and gone when you turn your back. The only recourse you have now is up to how much pressure you want to put on a POS.

I’ve talked with several DAs thru the past years and if it’s not a open and shut case they don’t want it My brothers wife is a defense lawyer and family lawyer There’s things that are not written but the usual case. Mothers get custody in divorces unless the mother is unfit In divorce it’s gonna be 50/50 unless something bad bad stupid happened It’s unwritten but the norm My wife had enough police tell her that the courts are so full and court times are pushing further out. Unless it’s violent crime not much time is spent pursuing misdemeanors. Most of the time the crook gets a slap on the wrist after charges are pled down. Drug dealing is the same deal unless it’s hard stuff or big quantities

I will say though my answer came after having to go to court with a friend the day before. I was involved in a lawsuit a few years ago . Lawyers also get paid to defend both parties and it is amazing how intelligent some and I repeat the word some of them are. I was also on the jury a couple of times when there was some high dollar lawsuits. A man better cover all bases now days. You better be careful about posting stupid crap on the internet also. Red flag laws will come after those guns first. I am just posting life experiences. I also rode a surveyor around for 3 days one time to get a farm ready to sale. He had been called into court on same land disputes that absolutely blew my mind

I know a guy that had his guns stolen. He now has all the serial numbers written down and photos of each gun cataloged.
He got all his guns except one back. He kinda knew who stole them and he went after them and he meant it. The pawn shop gave him one of his guns back and was what started it
The guns crossed state lines of that matters. It didn’t to him
No breaking and entering since the back door was unlocked. Several little things like that stuck out to me.

The laws are to protect the thieves, not the innocent. They have right, you know.

The laws are to protect the thieves, not the innocent. They have right, you know. The laws are written to protect the innocent but a good lawyer knows how to circumvent and protect their client. It’s also known to plead down to get that guilty verdict Slap on the wrist in the end Thanks to the leftist they’ve watered down the intent of laws

Guess I need to get to writing down some serial numbers, thanks I did that today. Didn't know I had that many. Its a good exercise to do anyway. It helps you remember what you got and which one's need maintenance and so forth.

Yeah if your house burns down you better have a record of everything and better have insurance specific for your guns.

Yeah if your house burns down you better have a record of everything and better have insurance specific for your guns. Troof right there. All of that. Have duplicate records elsewhere also. Ask me how I know. Fireproof safes are only partially fireproof.

Troof right there. All of that. Have duplicate records elsewhere also. Ask me how I know. Fireproof safes are only partially fireproof. Last December my neighbors house burned down. Even melted the Cadillac sitting in the garage. When he finally found a locksmith that could open his gun safe, everything inside was still in pristine condition, including the paper documents. My previous gun safe was over 30 years old. I went to Cabela's and bought the highest fire rated gun safe that could fit in my home office.
