There is a video floating around recently of a Polar Bear out running a dude on a snow machine.

Back around 1999 when I worked at TVA Reservation, Muscle Shoals, one of their research scientists was sent somewhere in very remote Canada where only a satellite phone could communicate to the outside world. One day failed to check in at the normal time and could not be reached by the satellite phone. After assembling a search/rescue crew, his remains were found partially eaten/partially buried. Seems like they determined that it was a grizzly but I don't remember if they tracked and killed it or not. The guy's girlfriend worked in the same building that our crew was based in and it took her a long time to even come close to getting past all that. Then, one day when I was over at TVA Police Headquarters for a trouble/service ticket, they had evidence/investigation pictures of how the scene where/when the guy was found. To say he died a horrific death don't even begin to get it right.
As for me and bears, I won't knowingly put myself where a bear, big cat or other predator of man killing size is known to roam. I'm so old and slow that I'd just be bait.
Get the F out of the BATFE. The F is guaranteed by the US Constitution. Those other letters are not.
What always gets me is the "experts" always recommend bear spray. The same "experts" that go in to investigate in numbers with Benelli shotguns, LOL. I've bear sprayed aggressive dogs and it didn't work well. Dang sure ain't using it on a charging griz.
Best bear life or death decision video was Fred Eichler shooting a bear charging at him in a river in Alaska I believe. Bear lost. Split second decision don’t know how he kept his cool. If he hesitated a second he would be dead or seriously injured.

Forget bear spray. Friend of mine that lives in WY said a friend of his got attacked by a grizzly and a 44 magnum wasn’t enough with 3 hits on the bear. I called bs but he swears the guy shot and hit the bear 3 times with 44 magnum and it was still coming. So I definitely wouldn’t want to rely on bear spray. It apparently ran off from what my friend told me. Im a little suspicious about a bear taking 3 hits from a 44 magnum and living.
A .44 mag, loaded heavy, is about 1,000 1,200 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. 12-ga slug - 2,300 - 3,300. .308, which would be considered too light for a close quarters bear gun, is about 2,600 ft-lb at the muzzle, through a 24 inch barrel. Once again, a pistol is best thought of as a remote control hole punch. If you are trying for an instant stop on a bear, you are going to have to break through chest plate, hair, fat, inches of muscle, just to hit the heart. You saw how much time he had. I'd be lucky to hit bear in that scenario. Forget center mass, much less heart. With luck, you would hit him hard enough to sting him so he'd stay around and chew on you long enough for your buddies to shoot him from a safe distance. Your buddies would have a story to tell, but you probably wouldn't
The one time I was in Alaska,I saw more fly fishermen with a pump gun slung upside down and accessible than I did side arms.

Was that the video where he dispatched him with a pistol and the bear was basically in his lap?

It's not hard for them to hunt them with anything when they have 1-3 guys behind the cameras packing BIG guns lol. Those bears typically bluff change and give ya the pucker factor and then walk away OR you move and they take the trail. Rarely did we carry a side arm while fishing, we just let them take the fish lol
