Anyone have any experience hunting between Camden and Beatrice? What’s y’all’s thoughts about the area?

Hunted there for 2 seasons a few years ago. All the land it seems is leased to clubs and the members want to get their moneys worth when it comes to shooting deer. The reason we left was the deer were hunted to death every day. No one in our group killed a good one in the 2 years we were there. We paid good money to hunt the land and it just wasn’t as good as it once was. There was a place in Pine Barren that held some good deer but it was way out of my budget.

Good luck to you!

That's become the problem with hunting clubs in Alabama.

Too many people thinking "I paid four grand for this club so I'm gonna shoot sumthin, dammit!"

Any club that's worth a damn costs more than I'm willing to pay, so I'm done with them. I'll just pay $5K and go hun5 Texas or Kansas and have a good opportunity to shoot something larger than I ever could in Alabama.

It’s all about the neighbors. I know of a lease/club in that area that does well but it is a cooperative of like minded people.

What if your club is "that" neighbor?

Hunting seems about average in that area.. Mostly Hunting clubs . Good overall deer numbers with the Big deer being few & far between.

He Always wanted to know where i was located - where my spot was. That sounded like trouble - been taken advantage of before on hunting! Showed me a common deer after i had showed him that deer and i aint seen bucks hardly since. Use to be good spot. Dont think they all died - would guess wether its him or not i getting cut off. Saw polaris tracks come in on my place on the backside recently. Gonna try to stop that.

I never tried to screw my neighbor - in fact i hav never kept up with neighbors on any lease. I control what i can control - what they do is up to them. I like to try to shoot 5 and up. My experience from hunting clubs for 40 years - lot of selfish babies out there so i steer clear of crowds - and giving out info!! I never got jealous over somebody killing a big one and they dont wear name tags anyway. Tried to be happy for them. I hunt my place in my eyes the best way to hunt it. Never focus on cutting off a neighbor - that would seen sadistic!

Thanks for the responses guys! My neighbors look to be all small private land owners. That probably doesn’t mean much, but at least it isn’t timber company land that would probably be some type of club. I’m hoping it works out to be somewhat decent. It’s my first opportunity to have something to myself.

I was in a larger family club just northeast of Beatrice for several years. The deer numbers were somewhat lower than I would have expected, or there was just so much thick cover they were just very elusive. Every now and then someone in our group would kill a real stud. One of the older members in our group who had been hunting in that area for over 40 years often commented that the quality of the deer had gone down over the years and contributed most of the decline due to the conversion of a lot of ag into pines.

That being said IMHO, I always enjoyed hunting down there because it was so remote and knew it had the potential to produce some really nice bucks.

Good luck, I think you can have a quality experience

I hunt between Beatrice and Franklin. Before our lease became part of the WMA, the hunting was good but not stellar IF you knew how to hunt those hills. There was an occasional standout buck but mostly it was 3.5yo 7 and 8 points that made a decent buck kill. Not a place I’d choose if I was hunting for wall hangers. I have a friend that hunts just a bit farther north inside Wilcox county and he doesn’t brag about the “quality” of the deer there either. My understanding is that closer to Vrendenburg the deer tend to be a little better but that’s hearsay from me.
I will say that the numbers(or apparent numbers) can be high or low depending on your neighbors and the particular terrain. There’s so much closed canopy timber in my area now that it doesn’t support a large population but mid season I’ll have 8-11 does and as many bucks crossing and using my 34 acres daily. But I have plots and corn and the property behind me is 2600 acres that barely gets hunted. My neighbor across the street has deer that don’t come to my side. Her nephews whack does all season and my numbers don’t change.

I used to hunt that area 25 years ago. Our place bordered some of the Gravel Creek dog hunting club land. A good number of deer were in the area back then, and some nice bucks as well. The hog numbers were starting to get out of control, and I am sure they have only gotten worse.

Hunted it many years ago and it was heavily pressured then, must be even worse now. Good habitat but a lot of hunting going on too.

Hogs were something we had contend with as well, especially during bow season if we had a good white oak crop.
