Coyote at 70 yards with 6” 686 .357 Riding at the camp with my hunting partner . He’s driving i’m in passenger seat of his Nissan pickup. A coyote jumps out in road , turns and runs down the road . This gave me time to get my pistol out and open the door . I laid pistol in the v of the open door . When coyote got to a curve in the road he went into the woods . His mistake was to stop broadside and look back. I squeezed the trigger and rolled him.

I was riding on a dirt road with my Dad and there was a quail walking about 30 yards ahead of us. He jumped out and picked up a rock and threw it. Hit the bird right on the back of the head and killed it.

I was riding on a dirt road with my Dad and there was a quail walking about 30 yards ahead of us. He jumped out and picked up a rock and threw it. Hit the bird right on the back of the head and killed it. When I was a kid - my grandpa and uncle took me behind my grandparents house to go squirrel hunting. I had my trusty .410 single shot and a pocket full of shells. My uncle started talking crap about when he was my age (I must have been about 7 or 8) - my grandpa would only give him and my dad 3-rocks each and they better come home with 5-squirrels or they'd get a "whooping". I looked at my grandpa and he just smiled (I don't believe the man ever told a lie his entire life - so he didn't open his mouth), in a couple of minutes we saw a squirrel on a limb in an oak tree. I told my uncle to grab a rock and kill the squirrel and he said, "there are no good hunting rocks around here - but, I'll give it a try." As God is my witness - he threw that rock and knocked that squirrel out of the tree, stomped on its head and grabbed his hind legs and broke its neck. A little while later - we see another squirrel in a tree and I ask him again to get a rock and kill the squirrel. He said something like, "I didn't climb this hill to kill squirrels, I climbed this hill to watch you kill squirrels."

Me and a use to be (friend) were at my hunting club years ago. We were both on my 4 wheeler checking green fields to see what had came up, before bow season opened. We pulled up to one, and he said coyote and pointed. I had an old. 22 pistol a cop my grandads buddy, had given him. It was a cheap 9 shot revolver. I grabbed it off the handlebars, and tried to figure out how to aim at a coyote at 90yds with a 22 pistol. My friend said he's turning and about to run, so I pulled the trigger, boom flop. Right above the right eye. Buddy said, that's the best shot I've ever seen. I said What did you expect...lmao. never told him I was as shocked as the coyote!!!
Love a good hunting story, love my family and friends. Some people you can't, but acted like do.

Not a living target, but...
1980 USMC Boot Camp Parris Island. I was 18.
I knew how to shoot a rifle very well already. I hunted rabbits, deer, squirrel, dove, quail, went shooting bottles, we would throw bottles up in the air and shoot them with our 22 rifles and pistols, we basically shot anything that moved. So I already knew... But the DI's at PI wanted you to forget everything you knew about shooting and learn the Marine Corps way, and I did. I paid attention.
We had a week of what they called "Snapping in" where you just got used to the shooting positions, off-hand, kneeling, sitting, prone. We got used to the rifle (None of us had ever shot an M-16), the special shooting jackets we had to wear, the glove we had to wear, etc... It was new to all of us. We had to learn the KD (Known Distance) course, it was a big learning curve even to us southern boys.
So after the snapping in we all went to the range and spent a week shooting. I was listening and doing pretty well. Well enough to shoot Expert and I really wanted to shoot Expert, get that badge and make my Dad proud, since he taught me how to shoot.
The last day of qualification I was almost there, but I screwed up a few times, because the wind was a booger that day. I missed a few a 300 yards and I really didn't want to settle for Sharpshooter.
Fortunately the wind calmed down on the Carolina coast just about the time I settled into prone position for the final 10 rounds. Now keep in mind this is at 500 yards, with iron sights, with a 5.56 field grade M-16, and you are shooting at a 6'x6' target with about a 4' tall, 24" wide, upper torso silhouette of a man on it in black. I needed to get 9 out of 10 in the black to qualify Expert at this point...
First shot. Target went down in the butts, and came back up with a white spot in the black. I recorded it in my book. I breathed... Second shot. Same. Third. Fourth. Fifth. Sixth. Seventh. Eighth...
By now I'm literally sweating bullets. It's May in South Carolina. Sand fleas are buzzing around my head. I'm honestly feeling ready to quit and I let the doubt creep in. I didn't lose my shit. I take in a breath, clear sight picture, let about half the breath out, squeeze the trigger, the rifle barked. The target went down. Butts came back up, there was a black spot in the white. I hit the target, but missed the bullseye. Dammit!
This was it. Do or die. I hit the bullseye, I get the expert badge, I miss and it's Sharpshooter. Still pretty good.
Keep in mind. When you are shooting this target at 500 yards with open sights, and you get a clear sight picture, the front sight post is way larger than the entire target. You are basically centering the target on the front sight post instead of centering the front sight post on the target. The "head" of the torso is a tiny black protrusion sticking up above the front sight post and the whole 6'x6' target is virtually obscured by the front sight post.
I relaxed, talked to myself, got a clear sight picture, let my breath out, stopped, squeezed, boom, target went down, target came back up, white dot in the left shoulder. Boom. Expert.
I went on to get 3rd award Expert before I got out. Still proud of that shooting...

Hard to top some of the stories here but the best shot I made was November 11 2007. I shot a 7 point in full velvet at 55 yards with my MQ1. At the time I feel like that was unheard of. It was a now or never shot. Neck shot was the only clean shot I had. May have ran 20 yards.

wife and I went to north Georgia to visit friends, just as we were leaving I decided to throw a hay bale over my side fence, did a major pull on my lower back. It hurt like hell. Wife had to drive to Ga. After we arrived my buddy took Mel to a friend of his house that had died of cancer recently to get some leftover meds for me. No idea what I took but I was drunk as hell. Buddies were shooting bows off the deck, I told em to get me a bow I'd show em how to shoot. They brought me a 25Llb kids bow and some bent kids arras.haha. There was a bird house about 30 yards away, 2" entrance hole. Jim Keener , from N Carolina told me to see If I could hit the bird house, I said I would put the area dead center of the entrance hole. The area hit dead center of the hole and stuck. Jim still talks about that shot. Several minutes later a big white rooster ran by and I killed it dead as hell at25 yards running.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
