Sold some property and buying a new piece. Planning to start with 4-5 food plots, and wanted to try at least one with native plants.
What native plants would you recommend? Everyone says "forbs", but what are the better ones to plant for a wildlife plot?
Seed would likely be bought from Hancock Seed. Always had great luck with their seed, but would be open to a new source as well. Thanks in advance!

Where are you located? Bought seed from a guy in Lee Florida (Billy Buck Barn). Had good germination rates. You can probably check facebook market place in your area and find a farmer selling bulk seed.

If you disc the field in late winter you should get a good crop of native forbes. Youll also get some not so good plants like morning glories. Rag weed is what I look for and want. Deer love it, Turkeys and quail too. Depending on the seed bank invasives can be a problem . You need to learn to ID your critical plants. Planting seeds isnt always necessary. I've got a polinator feild I'm working on. Ive bought plants and seeds for. I wouldn't randomly buy seed from a person. You can end up having to spray out what you dont want.
I spray all my grasses out with Clethodim. Especially non-native sod forming grasses like Bermuda and bahia. If its a big spot I follow it up with a burn and see what happens. That in its self makes a huge difference IMO.

You don’t really have any native options for a true cool season annual plot. There are a couple native clovers, but they don’t sell bulk seed that I have found.
Plenty of native warm season options that will persist into late fall.. joint vetch, ragweed, partridge pea, etc.
Like mentioned above, you’re probably better off just to use winter disking and fire to manage it as an old field.

With your native plot, plan to mow it in October, that will encourage new growth.

One of the biggest things you can do to help your soil fertility is to not wreck what is already there now when the trees get taken out......If its been in woods for quite a while then you likely have a rich layer of topsoil built up......The cost of rebuilding that from scratch would take years of time and potentially hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars

If it were possible to do so I think I'd rather have someone mulch the plot areas versus clear with a dozer.......People are gonna holler about N tie up and I dont disagree.......but I'd rather form a game plan for dealing with breaking down the mulch and having rich soil afterwards than to have to deal with it being taken back to bare dirt and having to be rebuilt from scratch......that takes years

I agree on soil preservation if you got that good old un-disturbed topsoil. Use a dozer rake or push up larger plots in a big enough area to burn them and then spread. One year near a bottom at a new home place a pushed off a small garden area. Years ago, I had seen grandpa harvest some nice sized red potatoes for years, but that new spot made some red potatoes as big as softballs. Deer sure liked the rape I planted too.

If you want to manage for native vegetation, which is something I do on tens of thousands of acres, you’ll need to contact me. It’s too much to type on here. If you don’t do it right you’ll have a mess. If you do it right you’ll have the best food/cover imaginable. Timing and following the right steps are critical for proper plant responses.
