Wanting to get a paint job for older truck. Anyone know where I can get a decent job for older F-250, mid grade job under 6k? I don’t want to pay more than the truck is worth and paint shops are asking more than the trucks are worth. I know it cost a lot theses day with materials but just don’t have the money to pay for paint more than truck is worth. You know a business starting out or young man starting out that needs experience that would like to get more experience without the 1st class price give me a number. I’d like to give a young man a job, and some experience in a paint job. And I know it cost a lot but I don’t need show room quality. Any suggestions appreciated.

Chad

No actual body shop wants to do paint jobs anymore. They want insurance work. I have a niece whose dad is a great auto painter. I have a 96 2 door Tahoe that needs zero body work. I offered him 6 grand to give me a quality paint job. I haven’t gotten a response back.

Check your local high school tech/trade school. Few years back the auto body class would do it. Instructor supervision. You paid for materials and made a donation to the class. Huntsville area. School starts back in a few months.

There's a guy up the road from us, but he's up here on Lookout Mountain.

He painted my last Jeep for just a little over $1200 and did a very nice job. Like taking all the fenders, hood, everything that could come off he took off and painting them all separate kind of nice...

I went in there just wanting him to paint the hood and fenders because of sun fade. He gave such a good price, I got to thinking about it on the way home, called him back and asked him to do the whole Jeep.

I sold that Jeep to one of my best friends a couple of years back, so I see it all the time. It still looks great.

Spillman's Paint and Body in Fort Payne. Ask for Josh. He's just a local boy running a small independent shop outside of town. The only advertising he gets is word of mouth.

I had a two tone ford regular cab done for around what you are looking for, but that was 4 years ago now and I honestly don’t think you’d get the same job now for much less than 10k at a shop.

I think you are on the right path looking for a start up or someone like Irish recommends.

I’m assuming you’d want something up there closer to Tuscaloosa than the coast?

I’d drive a long ways for a decent price. If I was a young man with a little art ability I think I’d start that business. I get a bunch of teenagers and pay them good to do the hard work and I’d just spray. Make some good money if you’d turn them around at a good pace.

Not all body shops, I have no interest in insurance work at all. To many whores chasing nickels and having to play to many dishonest games.
Again you may be in the neighborhood of a good paint job for the price range that you mention, but anyone worth using would have to put hands on it to know.

Most people have no idea what a good paint job takes or what it should cost, we’ve used some paints lately that were $1500+ per gallon

Most people worth using will, just like me, not be interested in doing half arse work it’s just not good for business and will not price something they haven’t touched

Were finishing up a 2 tone f150 now that the paint was $17 more than a new motor and transmission.

I believe it.

I have a 08 Sierra that has some oxydation on the hood and roof. None of the sides or bed have any (yet). Stopped by a body shop and asked for a quote. $5700. That was insane.

Looking into just have the hood and roof color matched and wrapped. Not sure if that is possible but it got to be cheaper than that.

Yep supplies and proper prep is where the time and $ is.

besides being trendy with old trucks, there’s a good reason why “patina” is a thing now 🤣💩

Its been 30 years since I've had a truck painted.

WOW, I had no idea how much it cost these days.

I need one for my son's F150. I've thought about us doing the prep (learning experience just like all the maintenance so far) and then going to MAACO or something similar. I've also thought about setting up our own booth and going to town.

I rattle can painted a 05 silverado myself. Went over the truck with 220 grit, bought the paint cans and clear coat from automotive paint store. Washed it, taped off what wasn't to be painted, took my time and applied a couple of light coats. Water sanded out any runs with 600, wiped it down again with spray window cleaner, then applied 3 coats of 2k clear. It looked as good as any peach or maaco job. I probably had less than $500 and 10 hours labor. I went with same color factory white, so i only sprayed paint on the areas that wouldn't blend in well, then shot entire truck with clear.
