This. SS recipients are the largest voting bloc in the US. Reduce those payments, and all of Congress and the President will be replaced by those voters.

How many times has social security supposed to be out of money by now? I feel like I have heard this multiple times

But, I have been diligent to contribute to my 401k the entire time I have been working so hopefully that will keep me alive

Relying on social security is relying on contributions that YOU paid. You make it sound like some sort of government handout. And lol the stock market could absolutely fold. It has before.

I’m almost 40, I’ve paid enough in SS that I’d definitely rather it keep going than just vaporize all the money I’ve contributed over the years, unless the gov will be kind enough to deposit me a check in a 401k of all my contributions.

But that won’t happen. Elon will get more government subsidies and we’ll drop more bombs in the Middle East.

Social security drying up has been around about as long as we're gonna get nuked, both are total bs to this point!

Here's the setup: average covered wage of ~$66,600 (SSA's Average Wage Index), 12.4% combined OASDI contribution ($8,258/year — half visible on the paystub, half paid by the employer), discounted back to the start of the career.
Headline numbers (combined employer + employee):

40-year career, wages growing 3.5%, discounted at 4.5%: ~$264K
45-year career, same assumptions: ~$290K
Discounted at 5% instead (your 20-year Treasury threshold): ~$241K–262K
Real-dollar approach (constant real wage, 2% real rate): ~$226K–244K

Undiscounted, the lifetime total is $330K–372K. Employee-only figures are exactly half across the board, so ~$120K–145K in PV terms.
The interesting structural feature: because wage growth (~3.5%) runs close to the nominal discount rate, the annuity barely decays — each year's contribution is worth nearly as much in PV as the last. That's why the PV stays at 70–80% of the undiscounted total instead of collapsing the way a flat annuity would. It also means the result is acutely sensitive to the spread between r and g; if Treasuries hold above 5% while wage growth softens, the PV of the system's future inflows compresses meaningfully — same math that's quietly working against the trust fund's actuarial position

The gist of it is the Greenspan model did not account for the distribution of wealth from the working class to the wealthy..

I'm assuming that is your B-day. Unfortunately SS pays a month in arrears, so you will not get your first draw until late-September if you become eligible on Aug 19. Govt screws you even when you're eligible to draw the money that you were screwed on when you were forced to pay it in to start with. LOL It's a great system.

Same here. I would happily vote for a politician who ran on ending SS even if it meant I don’t see a dime from it. I’ll be just fine and my kid’s wages might just get stolen in a lesser amount. I’ll take that.

That’s one reason I’m starting at 62. Hopefully I’ll get a few years out of it. 77-78 seems to be the average death age of my family. They go crazy a few years before that…….
