Why bother with keeping it as lawn if you’re not a paid lawn service doing what a client pays for and get a farmer to cut it for free for hay a few times a year????
This just seems like a total waste of time and money. Same question The cheapest answer is the best answer in this case.

This just seems like a total waste of time and money. Agreed but my FIL has done it this way for 40 years to keep it looking good around our place. I have suggested goat but nobody want to deal with goats around my house so awe choose to keep cutting the grass. A lot of time and gas but it is what it is.

I have suggested goat but nobody want to deal with goats around my house so awe choose to keep cutting the grass. A lot of time and gas but it is what it is. The “we’ve always done it this way” mindset is largely lost on me especially when we’re talking about a ton of time and money. Wild that a hay field that doesn’t cost a dime or any amount of time is not the choice he chooses to do VS spending $20,000+ on a new mower, fuel/upkeep and multiple hours every month for 40 years. Would sure hate to know how many hours/dollars have been wasted on this 16acres

Totally understand and you likely won’t change his mindset. That said I used to bush hog more than that on a regular basis. Now my cows eat it. While the hot fence took some time to install not a lot to do regularly anymore. Now I mow less than an acre with the unit you’re looking at.

Since We are going to keep mowing it and spending time and money that way, I am looking for opinions on the best mower options to do it the fastest and hold up the longest. A friend bought a Kubota diesel series zero-turn (the largest they had) several years ago and maintained about 5-acres around his house. The cut was amazing and he could finish cutting pretty quickly (MUCH faster than tractor w/finish mower). I never used it, but watched him one day while we were moving hay bales, and was amazed at the speed and the final look. For years he had used my Kubota L3130 with a 6’ King Cutter finishing mower, but he got tired of the Ag tires tearing up the ground especially on the turns, plus having to work around the fences.

We used to have a similar setup to this. John Deere Cab tractor with A/C and a Bushhog batwing finishing mower. Things have changed and that is no longer the scenario.

Been in the Lawn Maintenance business over 30 years. Ive used them all. My main question when buying a zero turn is what engine is on it. If it doesn’t have a Kawasaki engine I aint gonna gonna give it a second look. No Kohler and definitely not a briggs. The Turf Tigers are good mowers and Scag is a quality brand. Just make sure its got the Kawasaki engine. Change the oil and air filter according to recommendations and it will out last you.

We have the Tiger here at work and I have a Scag Patriot at home. Both awesome machines. I've been running my Patriot 61" with the Kawi engine for 7 years now and haven't had a single issue. Gas, oil changes, and GO!

For a little more money I would get the cheetah II so you can go with the 38 horse efi Kawasaki motor. There was a time where the vanguards where having some head issues. Don't know if they got that squared away or not.

I’m assuming it’s because the speed of the mower.
