Any painters in the house? Looking to get the house painted soon and would like to spray it myself. Just looking for any wisdom on best bang for the buck paint wise, and any other do’s/don’ts I might not be aware of.

NOT A PAINTER:

A year ago I bought a Wagner Pro 130 and have used it a few times for painting. It does a pretty good job with flat latex (we used flat - I don't know about satin or higher glosses) nor can I speak for enamel or stains. We went with Sherwin-Williams from Lowes.

If using a sprayer - keep it moving; if it looks like you missed a spot or was too light, just come back to it later and touch it up. It is EASY to have runs with a sprayer and be careful of overspray in the area. I would highly recommend putting plastic over windows, doors, and anything else you don't want paint on.

Prep is key. I’d go with the highest quality in your budget. I’d also recommend going to an actual paint store. Wouldn’t hurt to get a quote or two from someone they recommend. A good painter will run circles around what you do.

I bought and used one of the harbor freight $150 sprayers, all you need is to buy a 30" paint shield and go at it. The hard part is learning how to prime it and disassembling the gun to clean. I used it a bunch. the spraying part is really enjoyable to watch how fast it gets the job done, but the cleanup is not. one tip is that you want to use a 5 gallon bucket with them otherwise you lose like half a gallon of paint just filling the hoses.

I had an airless Graco Magnum sprayer for a few years. It was amazing, and made very short work of a big project. As said above, keep moving as you can apply too much very quickly. I’d suggest doing a few practice runs on something before you start, just to get the hang of it.

Sherwin Williams Super is the paint that you want...

I figure a big of a pain as it is to paint a house, it's worth it to use the best and longest lasting paint. I went to Sherwin Williams and bought the best they had.

Roll the house, don't spray it, it will last longer.

Sherwin Williams has gone way down hill over the past 5-6 years. We used to use it extensively, the last two times we have used it, they have given us our money back for all the paint. It's gotten way to watered down. You can just see it when you pour.

We have gone to Behr Marquee inside and Behr Dynasty outside. You can see the thickness between this and Sherwin.

We have multiple rentals, some long term and some short, so upkeep inside and out is something I've been familiar with for a long time.

Not a pro here but I used the most expensive exterior Behr paint from HD. It is thick and only took one coat. I rolled it and it still looks great after many years. I also purchased some MetalTech scaffolding from HD. The scaffolding was a huge time saver in my case. You can find the scaffolding on FB marketplace for less.

We rolled our brick house during the pandemic. It went surprisingly fast, and brick soaks up a LOT of paint. It still looks like I painted it yesterday.
