I went to the farm to plant chufas week before last, with the truck loaded down with seed, fertilizer, and diesel. I was almost to the farm, but still on the public road in Perry county when I came to a creek. It used to have a wooden bridge over it, but they replaced it with a 10' culvert about 10 years ago.

I've crossed it 100s of times and many loads of logs have gone over it, but what I didn't know was that the water had washed a tunnel along the outside edge of one side. The top looked normal, but it was hollow under there and when my truck went over, the road collapsed from under me. My truck was instantly destroyed and I thought for a while that I was done for myself. The Onstar feature worked great and the lady was instantly talking to me and calling for help. The airbag knocked me crazy and I didn't know if I was alive or dead. I was trapped for 30 minutes and the rescue squad got me out.

The truck was totaled, but I only lost 2 bags of fertilizer and everything else was salvaged. I've gotten another truck, but now we have no way to get to our house and farm and I don't know when or if the county will repair it. There's no other way in, so I might be out of luck. I'm very thankful to be ok, and even more thankful that none of the kids or grandkids were with me. The Lord was looking out for us !

It wasn't my job to inspect a public road, but I should have. I looked it over last summer and didn't see a problem, so I guess the issue started sometimes after that. Water will show you the weakness in anything. Y'all be safe on those county roads.
