I went to the farm to plant chufas week before last, with the truck loaded down with seed, fertilizer, and diesel. I was almost to the farm, but still on the public road in Perry county when I came to a creek. It used to have a wooden bridge over it, but they replaced it with a 10' culvert about 10 years ago. I've crossed it 100s of times and many loads of logs have gone over it, but what I didn't know was that the water had washed a tunnel along the outside edge of one side. The top looked normal, but it was hollow under there and when my truck went over, the road collapsed from under me. My truck was instantly destroyed and I thought for a while that I was done for myself. The Onstar feature worked great and the lady was instantly talking to me and calling for help. The airbag knocked me crazy and I didn't know if I was alive or dead. I was trapped for 30 minutes and the rescue squad got me out. The truck was totaled, but I only lost 2 bags of fertilizer and everything else was salvaged. I've gotten another truck, but now we have no way to get to our house and farm and I don't know when or if the county will repair it. There's no other way in, so I might be out of luck. I'm very thankful to be ok, and even more thankful that none of the kids or grandkids were with me. The Lord was looking out for us ! It wasn't my job to inspect a public road, but I should have. I looked it over last summer and didn't see a problem, so I guess the issue started sometimes after that. Water will show you the weakness in anything. Y'all be safe on those county roads. ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/K85bqTFQ/PXL-20260520-184321096.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/HLLq6P6p/PXL-20260520-184353097-MP.jpg)

Chu isn't important as a life. I know turkey hunting is an awesome thing, but not nere as much as family. Glad you're ok! Of course, you are right on all that. I just put this post in the turkey forum because this is the only forum where I post a lot and I wanted my friends here to know what had happened to me. It's looking like I may not get to plant chufas this year, and that would be the first time in decades that has happened. Good luck to all those growing chufas; we are getting enough rain that it might be a good year. I appreciate all the comments.

Dang Preach! Glad you’re ok and not seriously hurt. I can’t imagine rising down the dirt road and BOOM! Down in a gully. It’s been a mess on those county roads lately. Swveral places even the asphalt is eroding. Water is extremely damaging.
So, I guess you are cut off completely from your property? I hope they get that fixed asap.

So, I guess you are cut off completely from your property? I hope they get that fixed asap. Yes, that's the main reason I can't plant. I could park at the crossing, fight my way through the briars and wade the creek, then walk nearly a mile to the house. I will do that eventually, but I don't feel up to it yet, and I still wouldn't have a way to get seed and fertilizer across the creek. The county says they will fix it, but have to get a new culvert and can't find one. I get the feeling it will be out for months. There is another way in from the back side over another hunting club, but it's washed out too right now. Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate it.

The county made a temporary repair to the road and I was able to get the chufas planted. Thanks for all the comments!
K bush, it's a 10' culvert, but I don't think it's more than 40' long. I suspect it being short is part of the reason it failed; the ends are too steep and didn't have enough rock on them. I didn't realize what a terrible flood we had about a week before my accident. Our pond overflowed and washed an old jonboat with a concrete anchor tied to it about 300 yds into the woods.
They are getting a new culvert so maybe it will be longer.
