Carbon I’ve ran 100s of miles of slip joint pipe from 2” to 36”. It sounds like he better stick to glue. You know folks be rollin those gaskets up if they ain’t careful lol. Carbon definitely knows what he’s talking about though. He’s giving great advice. My water line keeps fracturing (3 times in the last 6 months). The leak this time is too small to detect the location so I haven't been able to find it yet. Two of my sons are plumbers so the decision was made to just cut a new trench and do a new pex waterline from meter to house and just abandon the PVC waterline that keeps breaking. 350 feet of pex is going to run me about $250 with my boys contractor discount. The trencher will probably run me $200 or so. While I have it I will probably run water out to the barn and to my blueberry bushes and add a couple of water hydrants. Probably looking at $800 for the entire project. I'm lucky and don't have to pay any labor fees for the actual work. Every time the old PVC waterline breaks it's costing me several hundred dollars in water bills. Last time it happened my water bill was $485. The one I just got is $325 which is how I discovered I had a leak, and I probably don't want to know what it's going to be next month.
I'm waiting on 811 to give me the go ahead to dig and they are taking their sweet time about it. In the meantime I have a wife who is mad as a hornet because we have no water, a brand new puppy to clean up after, and dishes and laundry are piling up. Not a lot of good will at Casa de BC for the next couple of days. All you got to do is give them 48 hours. Your locate number should be good 48 hours after you call it in. If they ain’t located it after 48 hrs get after it. As long as all the utilities use Alabama 1 call. Some of those little water companies aren’t on their list. Legally you got to call them directly.

I think the slip joint is better in Prairie soil. I've seen glue joints pulled apart

I think the slip joint is better in Prairie soil. I've seen glue joints pulled apart Usually if it’s 2” or less and you use good glue you won’t have a problem. Glue both male and female, push it home and give it a quarter twist. And don’t throw it in the ditch for about 30 minutes. Let it set up. Sometimes when you throw it in the ditch and the glue isn’t dry it backs out some. Anything over 2” I would use slip joint. Just put some soap on it and push it home. Just remember that water pressure will push it out so you have to thrust block the angles in it. And if you throw it in the ditch after you out it together there’s a good chance it’s slipped out.

And thats why i highly recommend pex,just put in a ball valve every time you need to splice and move on, you can get as complicated as you want, but quality pex, like municipex, dont give a dang, it is infinitely easier to fix than pvc, and frost penetration has less of an effect due to the hdpe having a much greater ability to expand and contract than PVC(poly vinyl chloride)..under pressure…pvc can split from end to end..where as pex rarely ever gets more than a pin hole if it does develop a leak, usually pex only leaks in spliced areas, like a bad crimp or something just not getting a good seal..it will be whoever does its error..unlike pvc..just being a hateful unforgiving piece of crap.

I'm not trying to get them to locate the water line, I know exactly where that's at. I have to wait on them to make sure I'm not cutting any fiber optic cable from ATT or and of my neighbors gas lines. They gave me a window of when it would be complete and that was from last Tuesday to this coming Monday. I was hoping they would get it done by today so I could get a trencher lined up and have water piped to the house by lunch tomorrow. It's not looking good though.

I definitely did two brass shark bites in the ground lol but in my case it’s for an irrigation line down to my muscadines/blueberries and there is a shutoff up by the house, and it stays shut off when not in use.
I was having the same problem, line kept busting at least once a year, and I got $600+ water bill once from it. Now I make sure it’s always off, and after this last time I cut out the whole section that kept breaking and put in PVC to Pex sharkbites and replaced just that part with PEX. It will work for now.
I will eventually rent a mini excavator and just redo it all in PEX (without shark bites).

Last quote I got was 400 to open trench 150 feet. No laying pipe,no covering up just cutting the trench 28 inches deep
