A good friend of mine, and former boss, is 66 and still works, even though he has plenty of money/retirement. I asked him why hasn’t he retired yet and he told me there’s a certain satisfaction with knowing you can tell the company to kiss your ass anytime you want to and not suffer financially one single bit.


At my retirement party, one of the Vice-Presidents was there and she knew me really well, we were friends, they were all going around the room telling funny stories about stuff I did at work and she laughs and says, "We'll see you in 9 months Mark!" I laughed even harder and said, "No you won't either."

I’m only 53 (will be 54 Sept 2nd.) and one of my bosses is already asking about me staying on as an advisor to estimating and design, WHEN my time to retire comes. I don’t flat out say “no” because I’ll have to hear the offer when that time comes (and I’m a firm believer in not showing my cards) but inside, I’m saying to myself, “me and Mrs Ford are hitting the road the very next day after retirement and won’t look back”. We’ll see.


The literal first thing we did after I retired was take a 3 week transatlantic cruise to Europe. New York, Halifax, Dublin, Belfast, Amsterdam, Brussels, Le Harve, Rouen, London. It really helped me let go and get used to taking it easy.
