My son is getting close to the "shooting" age so I'm sure we'll be getting him a bb gun and bow and arrow in the next couple years.

He shot the bow and arrow a couple weeks ago at an event and that's when it appeared to us that he is left eye dominant.

Does this mean left handed rifles and bows for the rest of his life???

I've shot guns my whole life. never anticipated this issue!

I am right handed and left eye dominant and never shot left handed. No problem.

Teach him to shoot right. He will just have to work a little extra harder to get good which means more time with him at the range. I'm sure you can manage that.

I’m all mixed up like that. Left eye dominant but write right handed, throw right handed and swing a bat/club left handed. I’ve always shot left handed (with right handed guns) and feel like I can run a right handed bolt action just as fast, if not faster, than anyone I know. I do however shoot bows right handed due to my right side being stronger.

I'm lefthanded and right eye dominant. I shoot, throw, bat, golf right handed. About the only things I do left handed are eat and write. Only thing I struggle with is shooting a pistol. I naturally want to grip pistol with my left hand

Shooting a bow and shotgun being right handed and left eye dominant, teach him to close left eye. I learned later in life.
Scoped rifle the same it just becomes easier with the scope.

Turkey hunting put a red dot on the gun and let him shoot. Dots on ......dot kills Shooting dove or ducks wear a patch or learn top close your left eye. Works for me.
Looking down the barrel at a gobbling strutting tom will cause all kinds of probelms for a kid with RH left eye dominance. Guess how I know.. LOL

I’m very left eye dominant but have always shot right handed guns because left handed models were harder to find and always more expensive, i.e, never on sale. Because of that reason alone, I would encourage him to get comfortable with right handed guns. It’s never been a problem even with bolt action guns with a little practice. I’ve never had a problem getting a scope on a deer or shells ejecting across my face on semi-auto shotguns.

Right handed, left eye dominant.
Mine a little weird in that I can’t close my left eye and keep my right open, it’s some muscle deal.
So I learned to shoot gun and bow left handed.

Same with me SC53, short of a patch, can’t close my left eye and open my right eye. I just shoot right handed guns and a left handed bow.

I can't close just my left eye. I've managed for years shooting RH guns though

Wow, didn't realize this was so much of an issue. My daughter is the same way. She's scared of shooting a rifle but she wants to kill a deer with a crossbow.

My oldest son is messed up. Everything right handed but cannot kick or punt a ball with his right foot. Looks completely spastic.

Both were left eye dominant right handed.

I learned this during some a time where we were trying to figure out my middle daughter. She’s right handed, left eye dominant.

I’ve taught her to shoot right handed, but it required a patch to assist the learning.

She’s not a hunter or big time shooter. The patch helps when she does though.

I’d use a patch and teach her to shoot right handed because it’s easier to find right handed guns and equipment, etc…..

Got the same problem myself. Am a decent shotgunner but very inconsistent . With a shotgun it is very beneficial to shoot with both eyes open. Easier to acquire target, analyze the shot and track the flight. Trying to squint your left eye will cause misses and overanalyzing the miss will cause more misses. Buy a single barrel small gauge and let her choose which way works best for her.

I consider myself left handed. I write,eat,drive,shovel,weld, hammer and shoot firearms left handed. I play all sports,fish and show my bow right handed. I can shoot rifles and shotguns and handguns right handed with no problems. Shotguns, bows and pistols I shoot with both eyes open. I’ve tried to teach myself to shoot scoped rifles with both eyes open but I can’t help but close my right eye.

My grandfather always told if you close one eye you’re only seeing half of what you’re shooting at. That always stuck with me. Especially in low light conditions while bow hunting.

I am left eye dominant and right handed. It has never bothered me. I shoot all weapons right handed and close my left eye while doing so.

If you wing shoot and are opposite eye dominant you are going to have issues. Your brain uses both eyes to compute distance speed. So if you shoot opposite eye, you will be looking down the side of the barrel. I have mixed ocular dominance. I didn’t get this until I started wearing readers. My opposite eye takes over when I shoulder a shotgun now. So I either have to close one eye or wear a piece of opaque tape over my shooting glasses if I’m shooting sporting clays. It’s a nightmare. I went from shooting upper 80s-low 90s consistently to shooting in the 70s. I haven’t been called to so shoot in a clay tournament in 7-8 years 😂.

Shooting anything else isn’t a big deal, just close or squint one eye.
