Sunday evening around 8pm my wife wanted to turn in early because we were tired from weekend work around the house. She took my male and female dachshund out to go to the bathroom before we all went to bed. I heard a commotion and my wife screaming and by the time I made it to the door Reese came running in and ran under the couch and my wife was coming up the stairs with the male dog in her arms. She said the neighbors dog came over and jumped on Reese and she was hurt. I called her out from under the couch and looked her over and she had a puncture wound in the soft tissue behind her last rib and one on her belly. I wrapped her up and we headed to Birmingham to the Emergency Pet Hospital. They said they couldn't do surgery on her that night but they would give her pain meds and keep her stable and I could come get her the next morning and take her to our regular vet for surgery. I asked them were they going to suture the wound temporarily until the other vet could perform the surgery and they said they would. I went to Hoover yesterday morning and picked her up and took her to her regular vet to see what could be done about patching her up. He took some scissors and cut the bandaging off of her midsection and when he did her insides just spilled out on the table. He told me right away that it was over that even if he got that fixed she would most certainly die of infection. I told him I didn't care what it cost to try and save her but I wanted it done. He nodded and injected a sedative in her and told me to go home that he would call me. I got about a mile down the road and he called me and said sha had passed. He said the bigger dogs tooth went in and punctured her diaphragm separating the stomach and internal organ cavity and one of her lungs was damaged. There was just no way to save her.

I've always handled death pretty well. It hits me hard like it does everyone else, but I've never cried this much or hurt this bad in my entire life. Every morning when I get up she greets me at the door after my shower. I had to sit down on the stairs and have a moment when she wasn't there this morning. Worst thing I've ever experienced bar none.

Yall throw one up to the big guy upstairs for me.

That is always tough. But I would imagine you gave her the best life any dog could of had, it is just always tough when they leave us. She and you will be in our prayers.
