How old of a 1/2 ton are you towing with now? The reason I ask is that my 05 chevy with a 5.3 struggles with my tractor on a 20' bumper pull. I get it done, but I take my time getting up to speed and give myself plenty of room to stop. It's probably pushing 7000# or so. The 24 1500 my wife had with a 5.3, pulled it with no trouble. I was thinking of going 3/4 ton when it's my turn, but I've probably changed my mind on that. Her truck also got 20-23 unloaded. The 3/4 ton Chevy with a 6.6 gas motor we have at work, gets around 14 unloaded. I have a 2025 with the 5.3 V8. I’m also pulling a 20’ trailer and loaded it’s right around 7K. As mentioned, it gets the job done but it squats the trucks pretty good and I’m guessing it probably right at the truck’s limit on tongue weight. I have looked at weight distribution hitches, not sure I really want to go that route though. I know if it's anything like my set up, between the FEL and a 6' bush hog, it takes up about 23' of a 20' trailer. I wound up leaving my bush hog in Alabama. That way I'm able to adjust the tongue weight some. I have equipment at work I can use at home. I haven't ruled out going a 3/4 ton gas truck myself, but the newer truck was surprisingly better than my old truck.

The GCWR is better on a 350 than 250. My specific 250 only allows a 14,100lb trailer GVWR to not exceed the trucks GCWR.

I just went through this and I ended up buying a 2020 F250 7.3 XLT 4wd crew with 3.55 gears. So far I'm getting about 14mpg around town. I did see 16 mpg on the interstate. (gauge cluster reading) I haven't towed with it yet, so I don't about towing mpg.
1. Dodge... I really considered the Dodge 6.4 with the 8 speed. But I just didn't want the cylinder deactivation (AFM) in a 3/4 truck. The ZF 8 speed (from what I read) is a really good transmission. But it was the AFM that I didn't want. But Dodge has done a good job on the truck. They were nice. I considered an older cummins. But I don't need the diesel.
2. GMC/Chevrolet....I didn't want the direct injection with the high pressure fuel delivery. If I go that route, I'll just get the diesel. Also, my bro in law has had multiple GMC/Chevrolets over the past few years. And he always has transmission issues. His current truck (2024) needs a transmission.
3. Ford 7.3.....Most HP and TQ (435/475) of the 3. Basic/regular pushrod engine. No AFM. Engine bay is very accessible to work on. It has the 10R140 transmission. The 2020-2022 trans did have some issues. But from what I read, some of those issues were addressed in 2023. The truck I bought had the CDF drum issue for the 2020 trucks. The transmission was replaced under warranty in late 2023. The only thing I don't like is the variable oil pump. And I've read about issues with the lifters. But some of the articles/videos point to commercial vehicles and alot of idle time.
That was some of the reasons why I bought what I bought. I felt like the 7.3 would be simple to work on. And it had plenty of power for what I needed it for. The XLT has everything I need. I drove a Platinum tremor. But it had the huge sunroof and more buttons than I cared for. But it was a really nice truck. I did drive a 2019 F250 6.7 powerstroke. I almost bought it, but it sold before I could make up my mind. That was a hell of truck. I really liked it.
I feel like any newer truck is a gamble.
