So, Alabama has suspended the state portion of taxes on groceries through June 30th. I'm hearing talk or rumors if you prefer, about it becoming a permanent thing eventually. I haven't heard anything from what I'd call a reliable source though. I'll repeat, I haven't heard anything from a reliable source. But if this were to ever happen here, you know that they would have to increase other taxes to make up the deficit. Well, they wouldn't really have to, they could operate a bit leaner, but pigs still can't fly yet. OK, back on subject. Several other states have no tax on groceries and I believe those states typically have ridiculous property taxes, which means that real estate owners are paying the brunt of the tax burden in those states and then some, while those on government assistance pay even less of their share. If Alabama were to cut them out permanently, would property tax likely be where it's made up? And if so, how bad does that pizz you off?

Pizz me off a lot. The 10 cent gas tax is up there too and every Republican in office at this time went along with it. They all can suck my big toe. Property tax will increase with others I’m sure.

They tell you they haven't raised property taxes in years. The state does it every few years , it's called reassessment , we're all familiar with it. My tax bill goes up , it's an increase , I don't care what they call it.

Property taxes will go up somewhat gradually as they always have if we keep the grocery tax. My thinking is that if they do away with it, there will be a gianormous property tax increase within a few months or year at most. Maybe several.

A true property tax / millage rate increase in Alabama must be voted on. Alabamians don't "cotton" to voting to increase taxes. That's why Montgomery does an end around with frequent property reassessments.

You could be right. It would probably triple or quadruple them though.

My whole point of this thread is that they're going to get that money somewhere. Everybody eats, but not everybody owns property or owns a vehicle. If it's the property tax that gets increased either by a percentage increase or more reassessments or whatever other means they may cook up, it means that only property owners will share the cost of eliminating the grocery tax. If it's tags, then only drivers pay. I don't like paying more than my share. I already am, but I'm certainly not for doing away with a tax that almost everyone is paying now in favor of a new tax or increase that only a few of us are paying. Lots of things pizz me off about all governments but this is a particularly bad one.

I have antique tags on a couple of Toyota's, I can only drive them a 1000 miles per year on those tags. Just hunting trucks so they don't get drove alot.

Why do you automatically assume that just because someone isn't a real estate owner that they are on government assistance?

The rules are very loose in Alabama. A lot of daily drivers have vintage tags, even though they aren't meant for daily drivers.

How do they police the mileage in MO? 1,000 miles isn't many miles.

I didn't. You're assuming I did. Maybe I could have worded it better though. "While" does not necessarily imply either/or.
But those that are sucking the government tit would indeed be paying even less of their share if they are not having tax charged on their grocery bill, which is already paid with their EBT cards.

People that are on snap and food stamps do not pay taxes on the groceries now unless it has changed in the last couple of years. So the grocery tax revenue from people on assistance is already $0. They don't pay sales tax on their items either.

One mistaken assumption is only home owners and land owners that pay property taxes feel the pinch but, everyone I know that has rental properties floats that cost straight to their tenants rent. We do not have a sales tax in Oregon which is nice and my taxes are a 'lil over 2k with my discount. The property taxes here are by City not County, across the bridge in Astoria they pay more.

If one thing isn't taxed, something else will at a higher rate than the next state over. They will get theirs. Infrastructure and services requires taxes. If you want to be 50th out of 50 states.........just keep taxes low. But, states and the US needs to quit spending our $$'s on stupid schitt.
