Needs to hold about ten flats total of shotgun ammo from the five main gauges and a dozen or so boxes of rifle and pistol ammo. Needs to be lockable and have at least some measure of fire resistance.
Nothing I’ve found online so far seems suitable.
Would appreciate any advice.

I just got a used Cannon 64 gun safe on market place for a steal. Im looking for ammo storage also. Think Im just gonna get a used storage cabinet from their also. As soon as you put the word “ammo” in their the price goes up 50%🤬. If you want some fire protection its gonna cost you a bit more.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm not interested in in a gunsafe since it will be going down 85 yr old staircase into the cellar!
I'll keep looking at storage cabinets.

I know someone that got a 24-gun safe with fire protection and uses it for ammo. Cost less than $400

I use a U-Line Metal storage cabinet. It is 48 inches wide- 24 inches deep and 78 inches height. It is lockable. It definitely is not rated for anything for fire protection though. For fire protection it will either have to be a gun safe and a high quality gun safe which will cost several thousand dollars for a fire safe with a superior fire rating or get a underground bunker put in and put the ammo there.

Get an old fridge or freezer, put a padlock on it. Humidity and temp control built in. You can DIY ‘fire/heat resistance into all sorts of things by ordering some rock/mineral wool like is used in homemade smoker builds.

I found on the side of the road in my neighborhood a filing cabinet. It is not your normal size but at least twice as wide. Maybe a legal filing cabinet or something. It is ideal for what you are wanting to do. It is not fire proof though.

Sam’s club has metal cabinet that may work.
Don’t count on it to keep any one out if they have a screw driver.

Or a metal storage cabinet with side by side doors and a locking handle, you could also add a padlock and latch
Both Very cheap and can divide ammo and some are filing cabinets are lockable

OK guys, thanks for all the tips. I found a MLEZAN brand two door cabinet at Home Depot for $170. "Some assembly required" but that way I can unpack it and assemble it in the cellar where it will live, without having to wrangle it down the stairs full size.

Put it on some blocks of wood or bricks to allow air to circulate under it, to prevent moisture issues.
Also, add a golden rod to it.

+1 for the Golden Rod. It saved my brothers save after a water line break. Very small amount of water got into the safe bit the Golden Rod dried it out after he took the guns out and let it do it's work.
