Hello friends

Last Saturday my house caught on fire and it destroyed the attached garage

Nobody was hurt

Just caused me a lot of work, time and money

Insurance fire investigator said the fire resulted from a battery charger. I knew that cause I had just plugged it in and 15 minutes later my son was calling my phone to say he smelled smoke.

The fire was too big for him to extiguish.

I turned my truck around, drove a mile home and called the fire department. Huntsville fire department is less than a mile from my house and it took them 13 minutes to arrive. The Huntsville fire investigator wrote it up as unknown or undetermined cause even though Stevie Wonder could have figured it out. While he inspected the scene he told me that's what the cause was but he played dumb in his report.

Is there anything I should know? I have no experience with this stuff and don't trust my insurance company called Openly. It's been aggravating. I'm dealing with the insurance structure damage guy, the insurance property loss woman, the man over my claim, today I dealt with the insurance investigator. Next week they are sending the personal property loss people to my house.

My garage is a mess. My living room and dining room is damaged. I'm having to wash clothes at the laundry mat. My mower and everything got damaged. My boat wasn't damaged cause I had just left it in the yard and now I don't have a place to store it. Insurance company said to send information about a storage unit so they might pay for it. I'm thankful I can still live here and me and my son and dog are fine. it's just a hassle that I didn't want. Again, is there anything I should do or know? I think I better get some quotes myself for repairs? Thanks for any advice y'all!

Fortunately nobody was hurt and things can be replaced. I hope you can get it worked out with the insurance company. That really sucks. Perhaps you should call different remidation companies and get estimates separate from what your insurance company says.

They even paid for a hotel. Paid more when we got out quick, and put a camper on our place. Got enough extra to pay my buddies camper off. He about cried when i gave him the money. Didn't feel right keeping for myself.

Sorry to hear this. I use no advice, but what type or brand battery charger? This isn't the first time I've heard of this. I guess we all need to be cautious

Glad your son was home to help and uninjured.

If it weren’t for his quick reaction it could have been much worse!

Exactly why we keep Allstate. I know I could save money elsewhere, but they have been awesome every time we ever made a claim, especially when we needed them to subrogate against a sketchy insurance company for an auto incident.

After the 2011 tornado, they were exceptional to deal with.

Really sorry that you are having to deal with this.

I’d open my own investigation in to why it took a city dept 13 minutes to arrive.

If it was a county dept, different story.

I don’t have any advice but just wanted to say I’ll keep you in my prayers. As my father would say, “keep your head up. This too shall pass.”

Sorry this has happened to you! I have batteries on chargers for my tools and 12v batteries being maintained and lawn mower and UTV batteries on maintainers. I feel like it may just be a matter of time before something starts a fire! Pray things work out in your favor.
