What am I missing? Is it just because driving a beatup old truck/jeep to the hunting club doesn't look as cool/prestigious as trailering a $25k SxS through the neighborhood?

Ha...joke's on you! That mudhole was on a WMA that doesn't allow ATV's, only street-legal vehicles. So, I would've had to get a Jeep stuck, not a SxS!
