google earth - has a polyline function that will give you area in acres between that and county property site, acrevalue.com, etc I would think you can get as good as a survey (just won't stand up in court).

Can you talk to your neighbors and tell them what you want to do, show them a map with boundaries and get their okay (maybe in writing). You can have a property surveyed 10 times and get 10 different surveys, depending on how far away they have to start, and if they all choose the same starting point.
