I've got another thread started in the Serious Deer Talk forum. I've been buying points in Iowa for several years now. I put in for the archery draw with an outside chance to draw this year. Traveling to bow hunt the rut in the Midwest is a dream hunt for me. I've bow hunted off and on for over 30 years, but it has all been on private land. If I draw this year in Iowa, I will just have to learn to mobile hunt on the fly.

If I don't draw this year, I'd like to travel to one of the OTC states in the Midwest to get a feel for high pressure public land.

Any suggestions?

I have no idea how much extra cash you have in order to do this and I'm not answering your question but throwing something out at you. Why not think about an archery elk hunt out West during the rut? Unbelievably fun and not that hard to call in a lovestruck bull if they are around. Calling them in range and getting a shot are two different things though.

Think hunting an 800 pound turkey.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I might do that as well. I killed a Public land 5x5 last year during Colorado 2nd rifle. It wasn’t during the rut, but still an awesome hunt. If I don’t draw i already have reservations out there for this season.

You may already but practice and have a pin for 50-60 yds. Hunting Iowa isn’t always 20-40 yd shots. I’ve got some insite on central Iowa public

True but a lead cow can save a bulls life real quick, especially in areas that get over called. I kill 90% of my bulls staying silent.

I've had some great hunts on public ground in Illinois...They've raised the prices so high for NR bow tags a few yrs back that a lot of folks started going elsewhere, like Kentucky, Indiana, or Missouri. It's a great place to bow hunt and they sure do price it like it is...Happy Hunting!!!

Illinois or Oklahoma. Oklahoma is a sleeper state. That’s where I’ll be kicking off the opener this season.
