I know middle not lower as have home in Marathon. We fish around 7 mile bridge on gulf side and go out to the Marathon Hump on Atlantic side. Are you fishing gulf or Atlantic? Makes a difference. Gulf for different types of snapper, yellowtail vermillion etc. A lot of reefs so you have to be careful and know where you’re going. Can be hit or miss in June. Good luck and have fun.

You might want to hire Captain Pat Bracher for a day and gather as much information as you can. I fish with his brother on occasions.

I fished the mangroves for snook. Live baiting. Probably most fun I have had.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
My phone screen does not always work right, usually a lot of misspelled words....

Another of my weekly fishing fantasies is bridge fishing in the keys. Just catch enough to eat and bait traps. Follow camp and fire rules . Sleep in the back of a 6' bed pickup with a cover. Enjoy the ambience. Coffee at sunrise. Is it safe ? I would guess no. Maybe somebody on here will report on the idea of such a bohemian trip to the keys.

I will preface this with the fact I grew up in south Florida and fished in the keys a LOT back then so I’m a bit prejudice when it comes to the keys and the fishing today. We went to Marathon last year. The amount of traffic and building down there now, all the way from Key Largo to Marathon, was unbelievable. When we went by Islamorada, there was probably 100 boats on the sandbar on the ocean side. Marathon was almost as bad. Restaurants were busy and expensive and the food was only ok. I had 2 half day charters booked, one for yellowtail and the other flats fishing. The yellowtail trip was a skunk. At one point on the reef there was over 20 boats fishing and this was Monday. The flats trip was great. We caught tarpon, snook, a permit and cuda. I wish you luck down there.

When I was a child, we fished off a Keys bridge with dead Shrimp guided by some friends. We caught many Hogfish and later deep fried them, and it was as good as I ever remember Fish being.

We camped in the keys one time years ago and it was friggin miserable, the heat and humidity even after dark were unbearable. Just drenched in sweat all night and the bugs were horrible. Next time we went we hooked up a window unit air conditioner to blow in the window of the tent and it was awesome.

One of my uncles was stationed at Key West, in the Navy, way back in the 1960's. I envied my cousins (around 12) that would go and fish off the bridges. They would catch tons of those mangrove snappers back then.
