Has anybody recently got a timber cut (pines or hardwoods) on their property and willing to share the revenue numbers? This would be in Marion county. Any feedback on personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Those charts are deceiving . Higher grade hardwood saw logs are bought/sold by scale and grade . Selling mid to high grade hardwood by the ton is giving it away.

2Dogs - Those are summary charts. The fee based report is more detailed but in the end you are getting a summary report.

I don't understand how they can call it state wide and be accurate when hardwood saw logs in the Northern 1/3 to 1/2 of the state are bought/sold by grade and scale. Of course the better hardwood timber is up our way. If they convert it , I don't know how they could even be close to accurate, since there's so many hardwood species and grades. The only hardwood bought /sold by the ton around here is mixed species tie logs and only a couple of mills buy tie logs by the ton as most mills don't have scales.

Good question . Most cedar is chipped for closet lining board around here and sold by the ton. There's a mill in New Market. As far as sawn Cedar, I know of no sawmill that buys it. I reckon there's just not a market for it. Most folks who want some boards take a couple of logs to a mill and pay the mill to work them in and saw them.

I'd love to have this one sawn , don't know what I'd do with the lumber though. I've never heard of a veneer grade Cedar but if there was, the one pictured below would go veneer. Not a limb on it till 30 ft high.

Absolutely no way to know that. Micro markets is what you have to wait on if you want to make any $. Mill will pony up for trees when they HAVE to. Best thing you can do is get your stands where they can grow and time the market. Imo

Problem with cedar is you never know what you are going to get until you cut into it. This one looks good though.

I had a guy tell me a furniture store around Huntsville pays good money for cedar, but i never found anything about it.

My understanding from the outside looking in Brazil and other countries are driving our pulpwood and other wood pricing in the ground like they did steel when US and Birmingham steel almost went out of business and probably did to some degree due to no import restrictions. Plus the housing demand is overall low right now, interest rates still high, and housing prices are still high.

They are a chip board/closet liner manufacturer near New Market, a few miles East of Huntsville.

That's just about any hardwood too. If it's had a fire in it years passed it can look great till you cut into it. We bought a tract several years ago that looked great standing but lost a lot of White Oak butt logs . Old gentleman told us there had been a bad fire in it many years prior .

A guy down the road has a sawmill. He said all the large cedars he's cut are hollow.

Must be a LA thing.
