I traded for a Stevens 301 410 with a guy on here. Apparently the picatinny rail was broken off, even the stud is missing, leaving the screws broke off in the holes. Probably shouldn’t have made the trade but I did. I didn’t realize it would be such an ordeal to get the screws out. I’ve taken it to two elderly gunsmith’s close to my house. One wouldn’t even touch it. One kept it for over two weeks. He said he got one out but couldn’t get the other one. I went and got it today. It looks like he drilled one of the holes partially, but I don’t think he got the screws out. Does anyone know of anyone near Franklin county that might be able to help me out. I either need to get the screws out or have it drilled and tapped again. I bought a Meadow Creek low profile mount and a red dot for it, but they are useless right now. I was hoping my grandson could use this if he gets cleared to hunt by the doctor who did the surgery on his wrist next week. He will definitely need something low recoil. So, I need to get something done rather quickly. A friend at church gave me the number to a machine shop in Haleyville that might be able to help. I’ll call them tomorrow. If that doesn’t work out, I will need to look elsewhere. Anyone have any ideas? If you know someone who can help, please send me the contact info if you have it. This may not be the right location for this thread but thought I would try it here, since it’s turkey related. Thanks.

Can you just have the gunsmith relocate the pic rail forward or back a little and drill and tap new holes? Maybe fill the old holes up with bondo or something?

Get a sumtoy mount and have it D/t for it and be done with the factory mount
I am not a fan of that big block rail.

I have a Meadow Creek mount for it. No desire to put the pic rail back on, even if I had it, which I don’t. Drilling and tapping new holes is an option I believe. Just need to find someone to do it. Thanks for the responses.

Dropped the gun off at tge Haleyville machine shop. He says he can fix it, but it’s going to be a bigger ordeal than I thought. The stud that was broke off actually contained the screw holes. He is going to have to machine me a new stud, weld it to the barrel, then drill and tap the holes in it. No clue what it’s going to cost. Probably more than the gun is worth. Oh well, it’s only money. Thanks fir the responses.

Use a 1 oz load in a 20 ga. Semiauto.
The recoil will likely be less.

I have that exact mount CD but the read part of it fits over the stud and screws down into it. Mine has no stud for it to fit over or to screw into. I don't have a 20 gauge semiauto, I have a pump and a single shot. The doctor may not even clear him to shoot a gun anyway. And I have a 28 gauge he can use if this one doesn't pan out. I guess I just used his injury as an excuse to get another gun. LOL.

Don't have any advice on fixing it, but I'd recommend against giving this gun to a child (don't know how old your grandson is). I bought one for my boy and the design of holding the hammer back while pulling the trigger to put it on safety is a poor design and caused 2 accidental fires from ours. One was when we were making a move on a turkey and my son was trying to do it. My fault because I should have done it before we moved. But it shot into the ground between our feet. Second time was the next season. We had set up on a turkey and he went silent. So I said let me do it. He handed me the gun and I carefully tried to put it on safety and it went off again. Terrible design and I'll never own another single shot .410 with a hammer that requires that kind of ludicrous action to get on/off of safety. He now owns a pump.

My grandson is 16 and has used my 301 in 20 gauge before. I also have a hammer spur on mine making it much easier to get the hammer back. Looks like he won’t be hunting any this year anyway, but I’m gonna try to get one with it if the weather cooperates this week. I just got the gun back, but I am running out of time. I agree with the safety design on this one though. It’s also in a bad location. It’s fun to shoot though and patterns pretty good with Migra #9 shot. Better than Federal 9s and 9.5s.
