I was okay the first year I got the place but ever since then it has been an issue. I have only planted brown top and proso millet the last 2 years with some top sown wheat. Please keep us updated with the progress

Once deer get a taste of sunflower well it’s not good. They’ll walk the rows and devour. I’m gonna plant sunflower interspersed with corn I have left over and plant proso millet beside it. Should have something to hunt over.
Gonna plant into standing cereal rye and then leveled ground. See if hiding the sunflowers from the deer in the rye helps out

I’ve planted sesame but it seemed like it was late to really produce hardening seed when dove season came. Now I just go with a millet blend and cut and burn it in strips and add top sown wheat in strips to try and get 4 good weekends of hunting and maybe a late season hunt

Poor country preacher did. I think there’s a thread about it. I planted about an acre one year, and also an acre of the Dove Magnet mix beside it. Then I top sowed wheat beside that. The doves preferred the sesame over anything else, but the problem was that I just didn't have many in the area. We killed a few, but it wasn't worth the trouble. If I were in an area with a lot of doves I would plant sesame every year. I didn't have a problem with it not maturing before the season, but I planted early and hit strips with gly, then would bush hog the strips the next week. It put a tremendous amount of seed on the ground and the doves used the field for weeks. I have planted sunflowers several times over the years, usually in a mix like the Dove Magnet, but I have never seen a single plant bloom and produce seed. The deer eat it as soon as it comes up. Good luck to all trying to grow a dove field; I sure wish that I could.

I bumped the thread on my sesame to the top for the benefit of anyone interested in growing it. I see that by using gly and then the bush hog the ground was covered with seed on September 3. It's more trouble to grow than browntop, but we have found that doves prefer it in the first season over most anything. My uncle has grown it every year since I did and we've had some great hunts over it.
It used to not matter a lot, but now there is so much competition in our area that you need a crop they really like.

I do a burn down with Gly. Had these drilled two weeks later. Once the sprout I go over with a pre emergent before a rain. Can’t really control the broadleaf weeds but I’ll will spray select before they form a canopy to kill grasses. I’ll also fertilize when I spray the pre emergent. The label says I can apply pre emergent when I plant but my application process isn’t 100% accurate so I’ve been hesitant to try

I do a burn down before i plant. I just plant the regular seeds because of the cost. Sometimes i do grain sorghum and millet. I think corn around the edges really helps

I planted a couple rows of sunflowers two weeks ago and only a few are coming up. Its heavy clay soil that crusted over after the last heavy rain, so I don't have high hopes

Brown top. 60-90 days before opener. Mature vs dried is the difference. Could spray with gly to speed the dry. I also cut and burn

I have had good luck with proso millet as well and the birds seem to love it. It's not as easy to grow as brown top and seems to be more susceptible to excessive rain.

Just did a little research and it looks like you plant it this August-October for manipulation the following late summer. is that correct? Where did you get your seeds?

The canola is going to be more of a “top sown food plot” more than anything. It’ll provide browse for the deer and cover in the spring before it’s terminated. I have some connections in the seed industry.

The more I look into canola the more interesting it gets. Sounds like the best of both worlds if you have a field that you want to provide winter deer forage but also have an attractive dove field the following year. Is it tough to find a winter variety of seed to plant? Is this your first year planting it?

I planted a small patch two years ago for deer. They didn’t mess with it much. Problem with planting and trying to harvest for dove is that once it gets hot it dies. So it would have shot its wad about now. It’s a tough plant, gotta use 2,4-d to kill it. It laughs at Gly. They have a variety that’s designed to be planted in spring and harvested in the fall but you gotta buy a pallet quantity. A 50lb sack does around 9 acres.

Got a good soaking rain Tuesday afternoon so it is off to the races! Hopefully we can get some timely rains over the next few weeks. Had some dozer work done a couple months ago around the dove field and top sowed brown top millet. It's got the dove reefed up around my place, hopefully they stick around for a couple more months

Picked up some three way scratch to keep out for the next few weeks. I will make sure it is completely gone a month before and just switch over to top sown wheat sections until season comes in.

So first year growing sunflowers, planted clarified. I’m sure it’s because of soil quality but I’ve got some that are 4 ft tall and are heading out and then the other side of the field the tallest one is is 10 inches tall. So first year growing sunflowers, planted clarified. I’m sure it’s because of soil quality but I’ve got some that are 4 ft tall and are heading out and then the other side of the field the tallest one is is 10 inches tall. Also, how much sun is that spot getting versus the other you mentioned? Sounds like you got a heavy germination and they are competing or it’s not getting enough sunlight. They can’t make up the difference with fertilizer at this stage in my opinion.

Jap is better suited for moist soil applications, like your duck ponds. It has a maturity rate of 45-90 days, depending on conditions. I would always give it at least 90 days, more if possible, before I expected water to be back on it if flooding. If you can time it right, planting 120 days before duck season is good.

Are you adding a surfactant with your cleth? Also, I’m sure you know cleth only does grass. If you planted clearfield you have the option to use beyond or a generic of it

Imazamox, just be sure you have clearfield variety sunflowers or it’ll get them too. That was a quick google search of active ingredient so may want to read for yourself. Not liable! lol

Unfortunately unless they are clearfield sunflowers your limited to just cleth for grasses. Broad leaf control would have to be done pre-emergent or cultivated before they get to tall.
What rates are you running on cleth? How many gallons to the acre is sprayer putting out? How tall is the grass? What surfactant are you using?

Yea they are clearfields, I’ve been reading up on the Imazamox and think I will try it, the weeds aren’t awful and the deer got half the field but just trying to take care of the rest that’s left. I’ll have to look and see what surfactant I have and I’m just using what the bottle of cleth recommends. First year doing it and it’s definitely a learning curve. Biggest thing I will change next year is a soil sample and make sure I got that right before I plant anything. I have some that are 4 ft tall
And some that might be 10 inches tall.

Check the chem labels for plant back restrictions.
I think imox has like 4 months on cereal grain and 8 or 9 months on field corn and sorghum. just something to consider.

Out? Clethodim is not cutting it. Don’t spray anything on blooming sunflowers. Let them completely dry and burn the whole field with glyphosate I have to do this every now and then. I bushhog strips to run the tractor in when they are completely dry and burn the field with glyphosate You have to wait until the back of the heads are brown. If you don’t the stalks will break off at the ground

I’ve got a broad leaf weed situation now being that I didn’t plant clear fields and killing the grass left some spots open. Planning to boomless spray over the top the second week of August. Mine are now face down.

Years ago we sprayed several fields too early and all of the stalks broke off at the ground. We didn’t lose the seed but the heads were in contact with the ground. It’s better to have the stalks standing for longevity. We hunt all 3 seasons. If you plan to just bush hog all of the heads it won’t hurt to spray them early. Just make sure the seeds are fully developed. I just use glysophate. Most gly has a surfactant in it now.

Bush hogged the outer edges and field where they may fall along with some strips where I saw low germination. Will add more strips next weekend and top sow the following. I’m surrounded by corn that is ripe for harvest any day. I’m sure I’ll lose birds but hopefully diversity is the spice of life for the sunflowers, wheat for winter planting and a canola area being a cover crop

That’s what am hoping gor diversity will hold them.
Sunflowers,corn,sesame,proso millet and wheat.

I will have proso, brown top, wheat and sorghum. The sesame and sunflowers were almost a complete failure this year with the lack of rain, and I am sure my limited experience didn't help.

Dummies cutting hay were not suppose to cut past my sunflowers. They cut my millet in July, Some of it put back with a few heads. I may spray it this weekend and disk some strips around it.
