I know this has been gone over a thousand times but I still haven't found peace with it.
I'm back out in the woods again. Camping, hiking, kayak, canoe ect. Tennessee and north Alabama area. Question is which handgun and what caliber. I have .22, .25, .32,.380, 9mm. .38., .357, .45acp, and .44 magnum. Pistols and revolvers. Single and double stacks. Steel and polymer frames. Sub compacts, compacts, full size.
My threat concern is people, snakes, alligators, and bears. In that order too. Am almost always alone. 75 years old so any physical involvement is mute.
I just got back from Bankhead National Forest. Backpacked in and brought a 1911 and 21 rounds (five snake shot) using a shoulder holster. But it was heavy. The weight ratio to firepower wasn't balanced. I have a S&W Bodyguard II - .380, 12 round magazine, weight is great but the round inadequate for two out of the four. Same with the other small caliber hand guns. My Glock 19 has a 15 round magazine and 9mm is up to the threats but then again the weight factor comes in but is not as heavy as a steel frame.
I don't shoot it as well as I do other guns but am adequate with it.
I love the .357 in a revolver ( I have a couple of mid size .357s) but then its the weight to firepower ratio again. The firepower is great but capacity to weight doesn't factor right.
So do I sacrifice power for weight ? I'm thinking the sweet spot is 9mm pistol, polymer frame, one high capacity magazine with FMJ.

9mm seems to be beast for all those scenarios. One mag for defensive loads and of course a backup mag I'm really starting to think that too. Especially with the Glock polymer frame. One magazine with HPs and one back up with FMJ.

One mag for defensive loads and of course a backup mag Agree - weight is "acceptable", fire power good, plus the G19 - well, any Glock for that matter, is as close to being 100% reliable as you can have in a hand gun and damn near idiot proof in operation.

I have a Colt Trooper and a S&W 581 - both medium frame 357s and excellent shooters. But for the same weight of either with 12 rounds I could have the Glock and 30 rounds.

I’ve ordered some NA3s brass tons 90 gr Leigh bullets that has the screw driver solid. The ammo should cut my ammo weight in half that I’m carrying now. Performance looks promising They should be running around 1400 fps https://lehighdefense.com/ld-load-data

The 9 is fine for your forays. I'd be very tempted for a 7 shot 357 though for bigger stuff heavier bullets more velocity etc.

They gotten high, but my Sig p365 xmacro (comp) comes in a few ounces under the 19 and she'll hold 18

If bears or hogs are are threat 10mm is what I carry with the Underwood 220 grain Hardcast. I always carry 4 backup magazines of self defense ammo anywhere I am. I figure it is better to have plenty if needed that to not have it all and regret not being prepared.
