I agree with all of that. Funny you mention that about parents insisting their kids go to UA, we had that exact conversation with GomerJr recently. He's a HS Freshman and as of this moment, wants to go to UA for Engineering. I went to UA and paid out-of-state tuition, no less. I told him if he wants to go to UA, he's going to have to have a 4.0 GPA in HS and do all the extra stuff it takes to get a full Academic scholarship, because otherwise it's just not the great investment it used to be. Not that it isn't a good school, but it's insane what it costs now, and it's not worth it if you have to go into debt to do it. When I attended orientation with my son 4 years ago, out of state tuition at UA was $57k per year. Without serious financial help, that's a hard "no" for people that I'm advising UNLESS that particular degree is going to open major doors down the line (and even then it's questionable/risky). For most kids around here that want to go to college, it seems the usual MO is to choose UA regardless of anything else.
