So many folks have no common sense when it comes to boats. Having your small kids ride on the bow w' no life jackets seems unwise, especiall in rough waters
The left lane is for the the purpose of moving the flow of traffic forward regardless of the speed limit. If your impeding the flow of traffic get your ass in the right lane. It's really that simple...

When I was much younger I fished south Florida semi-regularly. Haulover’s biggest detractor for me was usually the boat traffic from unqualified captains. That’s probably more to do with knowing ahead of time what was going on outside the pass and just not “doing that” at certain times. My only harrowing moments were in Jupiter and Boynton inlets. Boynton is TIGHT and that current absolutely rips out. You’ve got to time your departure and arrivals around the tides for sure.

You’ve got to time your departure and arrivals around the tides for sure. Same for most tight inlets. IF possible use the tides to your advantage - we used to go out of the St. Augustine inlet a lot, if you timed it wrong - you were in for an interesting ride.

Only time I've ever been truly nervous on a boat was coming in East Pass at Destin one afternoon on a particularly rough day. We were on a 40' charter and at times we couldn't see another boat of about the same size that was about 40 yards behind us. Neither Rain, fog, spray or other precipitous H2O issues nor darkness were the problem. The problem was lots of previous rain, a heavy outgoing tide, an incoming squall and waves stacked, tall. We saw 5 waterspouts that day and three of them were at the same time. The water naders or the rough seas didn't bother any of us, but the Pass did. Well, I say that, but two of the guys were hanging over the rail for a little bit. Capt. and mate earned their money that day and were tipped well for it at least. We did wear out some kings and dolphin fish.

I'm spent plenty of time fishing offshore over the years and some of it in really ruff weather. Never been overly concerned. Three current and ongoing navigation nightmares I hate to be in (1) Lake Martin on a busy weekend - the crossing at the Ridge Marina. It is the major crossroads of the lake. (2) Lake Martin - post July 4th fireworks show (3) Robinson and Bird Islands in Orange Beach. They have created huge boating handouts along the main channel to Perdido Pass. $5MM+ sport fishing boats mixing it up with some dumba$$ in a rented ponton boat. Only a matter of time. In all cases, it is a general lack of boating and water safety knowledge. Overheard some lady renting a boat one time in Orange Beach. She was from Indiana and had never operated a vessel or been in a marine environment. They handed her the keys and said be back two days from now.

Videos the boat launch at the Wharf. I love the Big Dan Show. Fun occasionally seeing folks you know, too. The Launch at ICW is a freaking zoo on summer weekends

Big Dan has one of the dudes that rents vessels on his show all the time. Surely they have to show that they've passed the vessel test before renting? I mean, I had to take it and have it added to my DL. And then alea gonna stop someone for some bs thing.

No sir, you do not. If you are renting from a licensed rental business and they give you safety training, you are exempt from needing a license. Lady I saw received ZERO training and this was from one the biggest boat rental places in Orange Beach. This is a prime example of how money can influence regulations even when it puts the rest of us at risk.

Passing a paper test doesn’t mean all that much in terms of real life skills.
