If the center of the ball is on the foul side of the 3rd baseline, but the inside portion of the ball is over the foul line, is it fair or foul? See the video.

I don't know the right call here.

That angle doesn't help, but if that ball is touching the line, it is fair when he touches it. My understanding of the rule is the ball must be touching the chalk, not just part of the ball shading over the line.

If (in the judgement of the official) a stitch of the ball was touching even an extended plane(?) up from the edge of the chalk, when touched by a fielder...its fair. 3rd baseman was stupid and the ump was in perfect position.
I had one harder (at least to me) than that calling at addison high school a few years ago. Late afternoon sun glare straight down 3rd base line...wet outfield grass/chalk line. Line drive hit over 3rd hooking foul. I got my mask off and up the line as far and fast as i could. Saw the ball all the way to just before hitting ground (sun shining off moisture on ground made me lose it). I didn't see the ball fair. So i called it foul and sold the call. Thats when the fight started.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

I remember my dad getting ejected from one of my brothers games on a line drive over third base that hit and kicked up white chalk, ump called it foul. Ump said it didn't hit the line, dad grabs a handful of white chalk and tosses it into the wind, "So how do you suppose we had a cloud of white dust if the ball didn't hit the line?!" Umpire's name was Ron, pretty sure dad called him Mo-Ron and got to watch the rest of the game from the truck. rofl

It looks like the ball is still touching the chalk. If so - ump accurate

If any part of the ball hits chalk it's fair.

I bet I know the Ron you speak of. He used to call pretty regularly. Can't say he's as good as Rick Blevins but I can promise you I've called with worse.

Who cares???? It’s up to the umpire. If it’s going to be questionable put a sensor in the ball and take the umpire out of the game. All games have become worthless because the umpires are the judges and have final say. Piss in reviews.

I watched it, read some of the comments, saw the ball clearly over the line, foul. However, the third baseman's hand is over the ball taking away the umpires entire vision of the sequence, so the little gamesmanship by that terd of a third baseman cost him. That's my two cents.

The fouling extends up like an imaginary wall.

Fair ball. If the ball was clearly foul, why did the third baseman pick up the ball? He literally "framed" it like a catcher does to make a ball look like a strike. Fair ball.

I think it was a foul ball when he picked it up. There isn’t but about a nickel sized spot that touches the ground.
