What happened to the concept of “Paying your dues”? Starting at the bottom, paying your dues and working your way up? Not just in a job but just about anything. Who lied to these folks and told them they could start at the top and not have to work their way up and why are people stupid enough to believe them? Hard work and success go hand in hand and that is not something that is negotiable. People see me now in my mid 50’s with a pretty comfortable life. I work pretty much when I want to work and for as long as I want to work and they want that also. What they didn’t see is the many years I worked my ass to the bone so that I could be in the position Im in now. Some things are non negotiable no matter what anyone says. Hard work happens to be one of those.

Participation trophies was the beginning of that trend.

I remember when that all started at the steel plant. Them little bitshes, were always complaining if they had to really work. I told them I'd been there 25 years at the time. We unloaded 1, yes 1 piece of steel that morning and my new helper wanted a bottle of water. I replied, I want you on the other end of the steel, shut up... He didn't come back the next day. I was glad!!!

I dunno. But companies bring folk in, train them and pay them as little as possible, then hire new employees, pay them more from the start and then expect the senior guy to train the new guy and make less in the process.

We embrace democracy but openly practice communism in most big companies. Learnt that early on.

yep some of its good though. My whole life you had to work 2yrs at a new job to get 1 week of vacation with a maximum of 2 weeks. now alot of places give everyone 3 weeks vacation their first day of work. The old south gen x got very little vacation time, now they do, but almost too late.

Well whatever it is if younger people in the pipeline don’t learn a trade like ac, plumbing, welding, electrical and such society is screwed because this day in time they could learn and be very wealthy if they played it the right way because the demand is endless.

Not every job is for every person. Supposedly we all want the best and brightest but untill the business community pays for the top whatever percentage your not getting them. That means a C class worker because no A or B class worker is going to settle. Evan Fong is 28 years old and has 25 million YouTube followers and his crew have at least 7 million followers how much do they make for playing video games with one another? Collectively $28 million divided by 6 and have since 2017. Young people now one moment of viral stupidity equals success not for everyone but it's possible. No your typical average creator doesn't hit it big but it only takes one. OnlyFans has been railed against as digital prostitute but Floridas Sophia Rain just cashed a $43 million dollar check for 2025. That's after OF took 20%.

I get that am Im sure it happens. I was coming more from the self employed, owning your own business arena. Ive been working for 40 years now and probably 30 of those years I have been self employed in some form or fashion so I don’t really have my thumb on the working for a company deal. That being said- if you want to be successful at anything in life, there is still that aspect of working your ass if and paying your dues.

I became self employed at 25 and retired at 72. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

I know a lot of Gen X folks that think they can finance their way into the trappings of wealth and it's a shame to see it. I feel sorry for them.

The marketplace will take care of those that can't live up to their job requirements. Only exception is government jobs and poorly run companies.

Incompetent/lazy workers will be fired and eventually the people who hired them will also be gone.

Rampant inflation is not helping the situation. Wages never keep up with inflation and in times of high inflation its particularly irritable. It really makes folks who are starting out at entry level wages feel like there is no point in even trying when their first paychecks wont cover the most basic expenses.

That is also a problem. You can make 25.00/30.00 per hr now and still be struggling. That used to be big money back in the day.

Drives my boss crazy that I get more vacation than him. I’ve been with the company 20 years. He’s been there 5. He thinks just because my boss he should automatically get more. He has actually said that. I’ve told him many times, the only reason he is my boss is because I wouldn’t take the job and that’s the truth. They tried to give me the job 4 times and I turned it down every time. It’s a huge pay cut so it didn’t make sense.

I also know many people in small businesses that treat good employees extremely well as they are really hard to come across these days.
