Residential wiring is kinda tricky. A white wire isn't always a neutral. It can be a switch leg or constant hot . Just depends on how it was wired.

What you need to determine. Does the constant hot. Go to the switch box or the light box. That's usually where I start, then try to figure the rest out. While I had the wires pulled out of the boxes. I'd pull wire nuts off and look at the connections.

I hate residential wiring. It's the most difficult to diagnose. You never know who's worked on it and what they've done.
