Got MRI Friday and Doc sez time for knee replacement... @#$%^& was hoping to not have to do that just yet. Would appreciate any insights and suggestions on Docs in Bham, on post rehab and how did it go longer term. Slowly coming to terms with it and realizing sooner rather than later may be a good thing...
Thank you for your time Kelly_123

Dr. Lemak did both of mine at Grandview. Rehab isn’t that bad if you have a good physical therapist. The quicker you get your hamstrings stretched back out the better. Both of mine still hurt, but not as bad as before. Arthritis eat mine up and as the doc said, he replaced the damaged joint, but the arthritis never goes away. So you’ll still deal with some pain and inflammation. It’s different for everyone though. Seems like it’s tougher to recover from the younger you are.

I had mine replaced late July. Wasn’t all that bad. Just takes time to work the stiffness out.

Thanks, there is hope.. Will probably go to Andrews Sports Medicine for initial consult to see what the options are and make a plan from there.. Will need to time it for being able to deer hunt this fall and winter. I hope!

DO IT. I had one done 2 years ago and the second one done last year. OA got mine. Hips will have to be done sometime in the future. I was told 20 years before that they would have to be replaced but I was too young. The rule they used then was you needed to make it into the late-50's or early-60's. Many doctors no longer feel that way. My PT said he could name at least 10 folks in town that had 15-20 year old replacement parts and were still going strong. At 6, I get around the farm and can climb ladders and such better than I've been able to do in 20 years.
I highly recommend Dr. Shane Buggay. He is with OrthoSports. They have offices in St. Vincents and Trussville. Maybe others. I'll go back to him without hesitation for similar surgeries in the future. And you will get tired of hearing this, but you have to do the PT.

Have had both of mine done one in '22 the other in'24 sorry I waited so long the pain relief is unbelievable it actually made me feel better in other places I had pain. A lot of Doctors don't talk about "pre hab" mine did since he knew I have always been very active. Do as many hip, quad, calf, back and stretching exercises that your Dr. will let you do. Andrew's did mine in Gulf Breeze my Dr. was awesome I wish the best for you.

Good luck bud. Im sure it will go well. I understand what you are saying about “coming to terms with it”. When I got my MRI results and found out I was going to have to have surgeries on my shoulder and neck it depressed me for a few days. I wasn’t expecting that.

Lyle Cain (the Crimson Tide knee doctor) did mine in 2016 and it's still rockin. I can still carry 30 lbs of gear, hike up to a ridge 500+ ft, and drag a deer downhill for 3 hours so I think it was a great success. He's at Andrews in Birmingham. I highly recommend him : https://www.andrewssportsmedicine.com/providers/e-lyle-cain-jr-md
I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kickin and screamin Life really is awesome ... Soak it up while you can ...

I had total left knee replacement Dec 16, 2025 by Dr. Brammlett in Vestavia....yeah, it still hurts and swells but hopefully this will get better in time. As others have said, rehab is the key. I will say trying to get square with the toilet to take a poop with a leg all braced up was the devil for a few weeks, hahaha. Make sure that your toilet is bolted down securely

I went on a mule deer hunt in Wyoming 2 months after my right knee replacement. It hurt like hell, but I tagged out. 😎

Dr Cain. He’s done 4 knees in our household. Our son blew out both knees his junior and senior years and Dr Cain replaced both my wife’s knees. All these were 10 plus years ago and still going strong. Our son does ultra races and marathons now.

Well, May 12th is the date for the left knee. Took that date to not have to fret too long about it. Gonna be what it is and glad I have a really fine team of Docs to take care of me. I AM gonna be ready for deer season this year....

Ice, Elevate, strap on foot and pull to stretch A LOT to keep scar tissue from forming and gain ROM! If ya let the the scar tissue stop your gains you'll receive a "manipulation under anesthesia". My 3 year old TKR has been bothering me lately and I have an appointment Monday. Hoping something simple to repair and NO revision needed. It may even be a ligament/tendon so hoping for the best. I've always been very athletic and competitive so, the therapist and I were pretty hard core. Like someone said, first couple weeks SUCK lol but, I used light pain meds so it may have been that. Enjoy. So far the 2.5yr old knee is just fine and no arthritis pain returned.

My dad just turned 68 and he isn't far from needing his knees replaced. He is not looking forward to it at all.
