We are in 6 u coach pitch at the moment but it wasn’t a great officiated game. IMO. I’m glad there are guys out there that’ll do the job. You got that mad during a 6u game?
I had much rather be tried by twelve than carried to my grave by six!!!!

Baseball season is well under way everywhere I know of and they've been playing the youth leagues up here for awhile. Then the other evening I'm looking at Facebook and on one of the local pages this woman asks how she can get her son on a team? She allows that he has never played before but she just knows he'd be the best one on the team because he can throw the ball hard. I politely advised her that she might want to leave the last part out if she wants a coach to pick him up lest they worry about having a parent that thinks too highly of their child. She then replied back that she knows he'd be great and she is proud of him and no one will tell her otherwise. I just shook my head and thought "Boy, someone is in for a rude awakening". I didn't post what I truly thought and that was that she'd better be great looking and post photos if she wants a coach to put up with her.
Not exactly umpire related, but close. Since I used to umpire games, from Cap League up through Jr. College, I figured I can post on this thread.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

PSA for whatever it’s worth for those in the baseball scene: you can tell what kind of umpire you will have based on whether or not you can see his shin guards and the direction of his hat (if he’s even wearing one). If the shin guards are exposed and the hat is backwards, don’t expect great calling or knowledge. The guy with his hat on straight with shin guards underneath the pants will be more experienced. Side note, if you get a guy that is dressed correctly and holds his indicator in the left hand and takes the mask off left handed as well, then you’ve got a shot at decent calling. In our association you would get run off for wearing shin guards outside of pants and a hat on backwards. Lol. That’s ridiculous. I’ve umpired with a few doozies in the travel ball circuit though. Especially these throw together travel ball tournaments way out in the middle of nowhere. They will let any warm body call those games. I had one partner get us in a real bind one time because he got the count wrong. Long story but it got us in a bind. I called the first round of the High School playoffs last night and it went smooth. No issues but did have a few loud mouth daddy’s from the south part of Mobile county. They be loud down there sometimes. Haha

Not mad, I saw chaos during a fowl ball. Coaches screaming at players, players scrambling back and forth with no direction and the umpire standing dumb founded, not yelling time. That happened at both games last week. All games prior to these, the umpire standing dumb was very assertive in yelling time.

Coaching and umpiring are thankless jobs….. Always ask yourself “could you do it better or would you even do it”? I was over the park for several years. It’s a struggle to get coaches, umps, people to work on fields, and concession workers. People love to complain about all of those things too. Parents who just “show up” to the field and are unaware how much work goes into it. I’d spend every off day stocking concessions and working on fields, then a parent would just show up and complain. We paid our umps 34-40.00 a game at that time.

I’m retired, you still don’t have enough money to get me to ump for those games.

99% of parents don’t know 1/2 the rules. Yes the simple ones. I saw a ump tell a few parents he would be glad to call the game setting in the stands seems like you always get it right. Shut them up. It’s a game yall enjoy.

The best baseball games involve a group of kids using a bat to choose who gets the first pick. All others are less enjoyable.

I think when my son played they payed the umpires a little bit for each game they called. As others have said you couldn't pay me enough to umpire. I'm so glad my son decided he didn't want to play this year. I hate all the BS that's at those ball fields.
