It's crazy how dry this spring has been. Last spring was historically wet and tens of thousands of acres couldn't get planted. Now the opposite.

I have a lot of relatives in Brantley County. The number of lost homes there is near 60 now including a friend of my mom.

I was just over there last week. I was telling my wife this place is a ticking time bomb all it will take is a stiff wind and a cigarette. Most of the land over there is owned by timber companies that don't do any prescribed burning whatsoever. Mainly Rayonier.

I’ve been keeping up with it. It’s awful. That’s a HUGE fire for anywhere, much less the southeastern landscape.

It’s terrible! Wife's Mother lives in Jesup. It is definitely a different world there compared to here geologically speaking. Folks are nice just the same though.

They're saying that entire fire started by a metal or mylar balloon hitting a live wire.

I’ve put out several fires that started due to an object making contact with a power line. Pretty common. The only reason I was able to get them out was I happened to be driving by within seconds to minutes of it occurring, and I had my fire rig on the trailer. Otherwise, they could’ve resulted in similar results.

When surveying over the last 30 years I am always amazed at the number of party balloons I would find in dang near every patch of forest in the state. One time I found the remnants of the JSU homecoming celebration across the Choccolocco. It was so much trash I called it in.

Yeah I’m not a fan of releasing balloons. I don’t know why it’s not criminal. Fined $500 for throwing out a bag of biodegradable paper from McDonalds, yet we celebrate the release of compounds that won’t biodegrade for centuries. Make that make sense.

When I used to hunt outside Montgomery, we find several balloons every year scattered around the property.
