I had an attack several years ago, through the night, just like you. My wife is an ultrasound tech so she took me to work with her the next day and scanned me. The stone was huge. The problem is if it moves and ends up blocking your duct, your gallbladder won’t be able to release the bile. So, I had mine removed. The only real noticeable change is I have to be careful with spicy food which I love. Buffalo sauce, with any heat at all, just about kills me. Also, if I have to go to the bathroom, I have to go RIGHT THEN. Oh yeah, I forgot about spicy food. You ain't lying about the bathroom, sometimes I be high stepping, lol! That's another reason I just as soon go fishing by myself.

Bile duct clogged, yellow skin, elevated bilirubin, crazy pain, etc. Looked like I'd been in a knife fight after surgery. The good news is that I can still eat anything I want.

My father-in-law’s gallbladder was non-functioning and it basically died. He waited too long to have it seen about and nearly died from it. It was so rotten that it was falling apart as they were trying to pull it out. He ended up sepsis and instead of a simple one day surgery, he got a several day stay while they pumped him full of antibiotics. It’s definitely nothing to play with.

Thanks for the replies. Seems there's a little bit of everything. I shy away from any surgery, especially if something is to be removed. A couple of you have suggested a dietary change, some of you have had some positive surgery experiences. Some folks need a bathroom nearby after eating. Decisions. Decisions. I managed my issues with diet, refused to have surgery. My mother was sick (cancer), and I refused to have surgery when I was needed by my folks to help out. The diet worked for me, for about a year. Eat lightly, nothing spicey, never eat a big meal late and then go to bed. It reached a point where the diet wasn't working. Doc said gall stones, and it was not going away. Had several nights where I woke up hurting, made a few ER trips. Eventually, elected for the surgery. It wasn't a big deal, little downtime. And as others have said, need to know where the bathroom is....you might need it quick.
