I got side finned by a big blue catfish this evening...it went through my glove and about an inch in the side of my hand...I pulled it out and bled like a stuck hog...what's the protocol for this injury...my fingers are some what numb... using warm/hot water and Epsom salt at the moment..

Some peroxide or alcohol to clean it out. Keep it clean and keep an eye on it. If your hand swells and stays hot and red, go on to the doc and stop the infection before it turns real bad.

I would go to the doctor. It needs to be removed. You also will need antibiotics as well. Trust me, I found one in a hand that had been there for seven months. It was causing serious issues.

My Mom caught a catfish in Galveston Bay.swung it around for me to unhook it and that barb on the side of it’s head went all the way through my left hand. That salt water made it sting! I hate catfish.

Can be some nasty bacteria in a catfish spine wound. Don't take it lightly. Go get antibiotics if it shows any sign of infection.

As written by all.
Go to the doctor, and get it seen about and start the medicines to prevent infection.
You don't want to wait for an infection, and then start taking the medicines.
If you have teledoc or whatever it's called, do that and get some medicines.
The fin going an inch in the hand is going to be hard to clean effectively at home.

Rub some slime of the fish on to the wound and it will help the pain when you first get stuck. Keep it clean and keep polysporin on it.

I have been stuck more than once. Never had a serious issue. But, I know others who have. Just keep an eye on it. If you need a dr's help you'll know soon enough.

Pour a little bourbon or rum into a glass, then pour some onto the wound. Drink the rest. You'll be right as rain.

I had one go "all in" on my leg next to my chin bone. Hardhead catfish on the beach. Took 2 months to heal and that was when I was in my 20s. Don't know what ever happened to that girl I was with but she had some fine...... Anyway, alcohol and then peroxide. Within 2 days you'll know if you need to go to the doc for some antibiotics or not. Depends on what was in the water with the catfish. This time of year you should be alright.

I hate catfish. "Gafftopsail catfish (often called "sail cats" or "gafftop") have highly venomous, sharp spines on their top (dorsal) fin and side (pectoral) fins. The spines are coated with a toxic, snot-like mucus that can cause intense pain, swelling, and potential infection if they puncture the skin. Key Facts on Sail Cat Venom: Location: The venom is located on the serrated, stiff spines of the dorsal and pectoral fins". My father told me about this when I was about 8 and we would go to the different bays to fish for redfish/specs. He actually got finned by one unhooking it. He was tough as hell. WW2 at 16, because he got tired of working on a share croppers farm. He got so sick he had to get out on an island to lay down in the shade. I was very worried thinking if he was unconscious, I would not know where to go. This was in the early 1960's and we only had a flat bottom sears 16' with 25 hp outboard. I did not pay attention to where we were going. I kept checking on him every 20 minutes or so and after about 2 hours he got up and was ok. I think it was Oyster Bay.

Never had one that bad, but I would probably go to the doctor to have it checked out. They'll probably give you a prescription for antibiotics.
I've been cut/stuck (we always called it stung) so dang many times by those things that unless I've put a knife in it's noggin - I am using pliers or a grabber to hold them. I used to use leather gloves, until one of them spun when I was chunking it back in the water and it got me on the forearm (it was my fault). When my grandson catches them at the house - I won't let him touch them.

You may end up with a tetanus shot, if it hs been a while since your last. One went through the sole of my Keds shoe (I was being an ig!nant young’un and trying to stomp one dead in the head and it flopped). Granddaddy pulled it out and rubbed slime from the body on it, then off to the clinic (tiny Delta town) for a tetanus shot and course of antibiotics. I didn’t walk right for a while from the pain and thankfully missed any tendons/ligaments! Grew up on a catfish farm and that was one lesson I never forgot…watch the fins!
