My son's turkey hunt starts tomorrow at Uchee Creek SOA. Hunt units are 5 and 6. Next weekend, my other son has units 3 and 4. I get to go as a guest for both! I'm excited. I hope we can get in some action.

do you get two units on all the SOA turkey units? I drew one this year but didnt claim it, dont like being confined to a few hundreded acres. getting two units would help make up for that.

Well, we came about as close as you can to busting one. First morning, drove an hour towards the SOA before realizing I left all my turkey calls in the living room! So we turned around. Needless to say, we got to Uchee about 2 hours AFTER daylight at that point. I decided to hit a high ridge that I was going to originally start with earlier that morning at daybreak to listen for gobbles in the surrounding woods. I get out of the truck to stretch and one gobbles about 100 yards down in the bottom adjacent to the road I parked on. So we scramble and set up just off the road and try to call him to the top of the ravine he was in. Would've been a 40 yard shot from our set up had he crested the top. As I am calling to him, another gobbler comes down the road opposite but in line with my truck. He's gobbling the whole way. I mean he is coming! I got my son to turn and be aiming where this second bird is coming from because he's the one coming, not the original who is still sitting in the ravine gobbling. We hear one final gobble from Mr. Hot-N-Ready at about 40 yards. I swear I could feel the vibrations off his gobble, but we couldn't see him because of a bend in the road. Had we set up for him originally, he would've gotten smoked! But as luck would have it, we were set up for the first gobbler we were working. After Mr. Hot-n-Ready fired off that last gobble, I hear a cluck. It was him! Then he clucks (putts) again and now he's headed the way he came. My guess is, he saw my truck and no hen, so he got scared. We never saw him, although he was easily inside of 50 yards. Obviously, when he started his alert calls, the other gobbler shut up.

Saturday morning, we set up down the road towards the area the gobbler went to Friday morning after getting scared. Heard a gobble several hundred yards off our unit. I told my son we would try to call him to us. Well, every time I called, he gobbled. After 2-3 sequences, 3 more birds chimed in from the right. Before I knew it, I had 4 gobblers hammering at my every call. Double, triple, quadruple gobbling. Just hammering. They got to within 200 yards of us best I could tell. Then a pause in the action for about 20 minutes. I hit the call, and they all gobbled again but farther away...then farther away. Each call I made, they all four gobbled, even cutting me off. But they got farther and farther away. I had heard hens cackling the afternoon before, going to roost. I believe those hens met up with those gobblers (possibly jakes) and led them away from us.

So no kills, but plenty of action. Part II comes this weekend, but we will be in a different set of units. I guess we will see.
