I cant say that I'm against this but it does seem like it opens things up the neighborhood Karen to get in folks business. I kind of think the regular old Animal Cruelty laws would make this particular thing unnecessary.

The Alabama Legislature gave final approval Wednesday to SB361, known as Beau’s Law, a bill that bans the unlawful tethering of dogs in Alabama, sending it to Governor Kay Ivey for her signature.

The bill, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman), makes it illegal to tether a dog to a stationary object, including trees and poles, without providing adequate shelter, food, or water.

Dogs tethered outside must be provided shelter with a roof, walls, and floors; enough space to stand, lie down, turn around, and stretch; durable and ventilated materials; and access free from accumulated waste, standing water, and debris.

Violations carry escalating criminal penalties. A first offense is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by up to three months in jail. A second offense is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $3,000. A third offense is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $6,000.

If a certified law enforcement officer has probable cause that the law has been violated, they may remove the dog if its life is believed to be in danger or order the owner to provide care at the owner’s expense.

This leaves discretion at a LEO’s judgment which makes it one of those gray areas of law
Say he get a call about a pet and enters private property without a warrant under “probable cause”
then he has just circumvented the constitution much in the same way G&F does

Thats what I'm thinking too. Its just another excuse law to get into folks business illegally.

I don't know how, but you can be 100% assured that The Law of Unintended Consequences will rear its ugly head on this one, as it always does.

One consequence will be to just let the dogs roam.

Neighborhoods with HOA's and where fences cant be built are going to get wild. I'm willing to bet that is where this law originated.

Chaining a dog to something stationary is BS. Texas does not allow it period.

I'm not what you would call an animal lover, but I can't stand to see an animal chained up.

Dogs are all descended from the Wolf and like wolves are social animals. It would be like taking a human, a Dolphin or an Orca and putting them in solitary confinement.

Simply put, it's a punishment that none of them, other than the occasional human, deserves.

I agree. It's dangerous for the dog too. Dogs can hang themselves if a dog house isn't positioned right. That said, there is a benefit to tying a hunting dog out at a certain age. It gives them confidence. But that's a temporary thing. Only a couple of weeks or so

We have a really good friend and God love her, she basically runs a boxer rescue. The gal is seriously like the crazy dog lady, but is otherwise a pretty normal chick (for a chick). Anyway... she is also a beach loving gal like so many are and of course wants to move down here.

I found her a really nice place for a really good price just down the road in Oyster Bay. A really nice, quiet 55+ community.

She said she couldn't buy it, because they only allow two dogs per house...

I'm like, "So your life long dream has been to have a place at the beach and you're letting a couple of dogs ruin that for you? OK..."

Dog culture and culture Ethernet laws are two different things.

I don’t have. Problem with dogs being tethered if they’re truly being cared for and not just chained up and left alone for days. Tethered in a run and well care for are fine by me which at times may be a better scenario than a very small cage.

What I don’t get is folks getting dogs to tie up. Just don’t get the dog. And breeders are a huge issue right now. There’s responsible breeders but there’s too many that are not.

Recently in the shoals we’ve had 83 dogs at one breeder. She started back up and got her for 40 something more dogs. Another breeder had 50 so thing and the latest a few weeks ago, 191 doodles. It’s hoarders it’s seems they become.

I have a Mobile Home that sits on 1 acre and adjoins my property. Had a young couple in the place for about a 2years. Had a full blood yellow lab that they chained to a tree 24/7, never barked all day while they were gone. Soon as they got home dog barked non stop all night, kept me and wife up. Finally convinced him to bring his dog in at night. Told me he paid 3500 for dog and that was 50% discount because he got a family discount. Told me he spent 7K on obedience training. That' dog deserved better than that. Don't know why the heck he had that dog. After that guy came the renters with a rooster farm, but that's another story and why I bought the property!

A pit kept us up all night and that’s when me and my drug dealing neighbor got into it
He wouldn’t feed or water it. My back door neighbor was and got caught. My marine Vietnam vet neighbor invited him over the fence to play with knives lol. He didn’t like guns it wasn’t personal enough. Glad my drug dealing neighbor is gone

I have two Dachshunds that we treat like the members of our family that they are. My wife would love to have 10 more but I always point out that getting more is a disservice to the two we have. While your friend thinks she is helping more Boxers (a breed I've always liked) she needs to take the two that mean the most to her and give them and herself the best life possible. Of course, you already know this so I'm just validating your post with another opinion on the matter, not that it needs it.

My dad had a hound when I was a kid that he picked up as a grown dog. That dog chewed through chain link like it was nothing. After about the 3rd time he tore out, he chained him in the yard with an old truck topper to use as a house. I guess he had lived on a chain before we got him, because that's where he wanted to be. No problems with him after that.

IMO, there are ways to chain a dog that are fine. There are also ways that are terrible.
