I remember when computers with reel to reels took up entire floors of buildings and then later they got small enough to take up a closet. Now data centers take up more space than a small town and consume massive amounts of electricity and water. Here is a story out of Kentucky about a retirement mobile home park that has to vacate within 3 months for a data center. I wonder when the technology will leap again and we suddenly see data centers that are the size of a small house. My first job with Texas Instruments, my programs were ran using punch cards. The computer operator had a nice heavy steel cart with six drawers on wheels that stored all those punch cards. When TI moved away from them, they sold the old equipment. I bought that cart for $5 and still have it today. It is the best toolbox I have ever owned.

Data centers don't seem to be very eco friendly. Wonder why there's no outcry from the libtards. Saw a story out of Michigan where noise from a DC in a nearby neighborhood was so annoying people were wanting to leave but couldn't sell, property values killed.

If it were true, I saw where China had put one underwater I assumed in the Ocean. It was more efficient because of the water cooling the equipment.

Data centers require so much power that local grids aren’t capable of supporting it. They are using jet engines powered by natural gas as massive gensets which is causing the noise. $GEV is the big player in that space

$GEV is the big player in that space I was involved with site prep for some of these generation stations on Guam in the early 1990s. Those constantly running GE jet engines put out a lot of noise. It was like being next to an airport where the planes ran at full throttle but never took off.

I remember years ago in meetings we would have at the power company, we were concerned to see power consumption dropping, because manufacturing was moving from the United States and appliances, light bulbs, etc... were all getting more and more efficient. At that time, electric cars were just getting started, so we were hopeful that the widespread adoption of those would balance out the demand.
Fast forward to now and I don't think lack of consumer power consumption is an issue for the power company anymore.
