I can agree with the America first. However the way I see is if I had a friend in another town and that town wanted to or had started killing people outside his neighborhood and was threatening to come to his neighborhood next, I’d do everything in my power to protect my friend before they started killing his family . I’d do what I could to protect him before they got to his house and not wait to see if they skipped his house. Whether he asked me or not. It comes down to that’s what friends do. This is basically what the U. S. Is doing here. I’d hate to be that friend that would think he could count on you to help him out.

I hope im you're freind! With that said, my belief is still the same. I believe our country gets involved in to much crap outside our borders. We have enough problems right here, and are more than capable of defending ourselves here. And EVERY single time they say its because if we dont the boogie man is gonna get us. Theres two sides to that. One its working, thats why we haven't been attack. Two its bs and just another way for our corrupt government to launder our money. Because of how things are run here, and all the past results, i choose to believe two. If you believe one i respect that, but disagree. Also i dont say this out of bragging, its just to show im not ignorant on the subject of war. My father was an airborne soldier during vietnam, i saw combat in Iraq, my sil currently serves in the us army. Im may be wrong, but i think i know the subject!

Japan was part of the Axis that included Germany and Italy. Once we were attacked by Japan, we were in a state of war with all 3.

The big question is whether of not FDR allowed the attack on Pearl to happen so we could join the war that until that time was strongly opposed by the American public.

So why, according to your logic here, did we get involved in the European Theatre ?

We spent about 4 to 5 years building up our military before WWII because it was inevitable that another war was coming and that we would be getting into it. Pearl Harbor just made it easier to explain why we got into it when we did.

I disagree with you on Russia keeping Iran from having a nuke. Russia has helped them in nuclear and missle technology. Helped build and fuel the Bushehr nuclear plant along with providing training and materials to them. So they may say they don’t want them to have one but by god them damn Russians are huge propagandists.

I find it an absolute shame that we have so many, even one is too many, uninformed Americans on here that can't see the problems with a nuclear Iran. For those of you that say it is not our problem. Well, we stood by and watched as they were allowed to develop supersonic missile capable of reaching our closest ally. Then we stood by as they got closer to nuclear weapons. If they developed these they would have certainly used them on Israel igniting a nuclear war. Now, we know that they have ballistic missiles with the range to strike our assets and possibly our mainland.

When you are the baddest kid on the block and a bully is picking on your friends, it is time to stand up and put the bully it his place.

The obvious answer is that there was an imminent threat rising in Europe that would affect the United States.

Russia like other countries (China, Pakistan, France) gave Iran technological assistance to build nuclear power plants and energy, but none of them outright sold them a nuclear weapon. They could have, but they didn't. They also knew full well, just like everybody else, that once you get nuclear power plants the weapons can be built easily. Thats where I start scratching my head. My guess is that those countries, France and Pakistan included, wanted to see Iran build a weapon, and that they wanted to see how Israel and the US would deal with it.
Russia and China did the same thing with N. Korea. They helped N.Korea get a nuclear power plant going and immediately N. Korea built a nuclear weapon.

You may want to revisit that statement. I don't think we really started building up our military until about 1939 after the shit had already started hitting the fan.

As late as 1939 our entire Army had less than 190,000 troops. We ranked about 17th in the world. The Marines only had about 20,000 in 1939 making it a very small fighting force.

We were badly understaffed, undertrained and underequipped when we first started getting involved. When the Japs assaulted Wake Island in 1941 we only had about 500 marines defending the island at the time. It was just grit and determination that we even held out for 15 days.

When we first engaged the Germans in North Africa at Kasserine Pass all the way in 1943 we got our noses bloodied pretty bad. If it wasn't for poor German logistics holding Rommel back, it would have been a lot worse.

So based on my understanding of the history, we were woefully unprepared for WWII.

Just so we dont split hairs, I grok'ed it. laugh We were under-prepared but the build up began before official entry, we're both right.

Key milestones marking the start of the buildup:Spring/summer 1940: President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congress responded to the crisis in Europe by ramping up defense efforts. This included calls for massive aircraft production and supplemental appropriations.

July 19, 1940: The Two-Ocean Navy Act (also known as the Vinson-Walsh Act) was signed into law. This authorized the largest naval expansion in US history at the time—billions in funding to build a navy capable of operating in both the Atlantic and Pacific simultaneously.

September 16, 1940: The Selective Training and Service Act was signed, establishing the first peacetime military draft in US history. This enabled the Army to grow dramatically (from under 200,000 in 1939 toward over 1.4 million authorized strength). By December 1941, US armed forces had reached nearly 2.2 million personnel.

There were some earlier preparatory moves, such as Roosevelt’s push for increased air power and rearmament discussions starting in late 1938, but these were modest compared to the 1940 surge. The real shift to wartime-scale military expansion and mobilization occurred in 1940, transitioning the US from a small peacetime force to the foundation of what became the “Arsenal of Democracy.”

This pre-Pearl Harbor buildup proved critical: it allowed the US to rapidly scale up once war was declared, though full wartime production and deployment ramped up even further after December 1941.

I was responding to the statement where you said we were building up for 4-5 years before WWII. If you only have 180k troops in 1939, that ain't many. The war started in 1939, so if we were building up for 4-5 years before that, why didn't we have more people already trained and in there? That was my point.

Another interesting point was that even though we didn't have many troops, we were in effect teaching men how to live and work under similar conditions in the CCC for 4-5 years before that, and I think that certainly helped. Something like the CCC work camps would have been good pre-training for the military. Dangerous, hard work in a team environment.

Men were built different back then. They were in better shape and probably had more experience with rifles compared to today. I seen something the other day that was talking about the amount of stuff produced in that time. They was building a ship per week and a plane daily, several tanks were built a day. Or something like that. It was pretty impressive. What they couldn't do was, pull a million soldiers out of the workforce and spool up manufacturing at the same time. You kinda needed the manufacturing set up first. Once production was established. The could fill the gaps with women and older people. In the beginning there was a lot of clandestine activities set up for resistance groups. Then figuring out where the battle should take place. The battle line moved pretty rapidly. They didn't have the luxury of satellite pictures or encrypted comms to relay real time info.

I think what a lot of people don't realize is the Iranian people aren't all that bad. They have a very crappy government. The longer that government stays in place all the good people flee or die.
