Doug Jones won a special election in 2017 and his Republican opponent was Roy Moore. Even with the 'R' behind his name, Roy Moore was not popular even with Republicans. Even though Roy had been in politics in Alabama for 25 years when he ran against Jones no one had ever lobbed sexual misconduct allegations against him. Given that he was always a controversial politician, its hard to believe that no one ever ran across his supposed misdeeds. I think when he lost, those allegations and accusers evaporated. I'm no fan of Roy, but always thought that was a political hit job much like they attempted against Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh.

It probably was a hit job. Besides the controversy about the 10 Commandments, Roy's rulings and conduct in the state supreme court was largely viewed as fair, reasonable, and leaned conservative.
