I’ve never been much of a turkey hunter. I always just went with dad a few times a year to make him happy. A couple years ago I really got bit by “the bug” but never could make anything happen. Hell I don’t know what I was doing(still don’t exactly). Last season me and a buddy hunted religiously and I was fortunate enough to harvest 2 birds. This season I was determined to do it on my own. I bought serval calls last season and played around with them during season but relied on my dad and buddy to do the calling. But I practiced with them all winter getting ready for this season’s hunts. I had a buddy through work talk me into coming down to hunt Blackwater Forest with him, and man did I learn something in a couple mornings. Well turns out he happened to be in town for work so I invited him to go with me to my lease Thursday morning. What a freaking morning! Standing at the edge of the plot and one gobbles about 50 yards across the creek and as we’re deciding what to do one gobbles over our heads! We scramble and get set up before we get busted. Hens start flying down in the plot, ended up with 8 hens/Jake’s in the field. The one over our head pitches down across the creek and goes the other way, bummer!! All of a sudden a hen starts up right behind us, I’m thinking it’s my buddy calling. Next thing I know she pitches and flies just over my head, then another right behind her. I’m sitting here watching 9 birds in the field when I notice one has a dang beard! He starts strutting around chasing the hens around. I watch for a little bit and finally can’t take anymore so I have the idea to try calling the hens to me. Keep in mind I’ve never really called a turkey. I start calling with the mouth call and I be dang if the hens don’t start talking back and easing down the field to me and he follows! Well they ease off in to the creek bottom, crap!! I keep calling trying to get them to me. He breaks and struts right to me! Is this for real?! He makes it about 15 steps and struts in circles. I keep waiting for him to break strut and stick his head out but he never would. After a couple minutes of torture i finally end it! Me and my buddy jump up and start celebrating. Then it hit me, I did it. I finally did it! I called in and away from hens a nice gobbler. It turns out he had 3 beards, 9” 5” 4”. One spur was broken off completely and the other was all fouled up. To say I’ve been in cloud 9 is an understatement! ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/nLKkYKFB/IMG-4912.jpg)
