It looks like fertilizer could double in price in the next several weeks. If that holds out for a long period, it is going to make fall planting of green fields VERY high. Until this years dues starts coming in, most clubs can't afford to buy fertilizer now and store it for this fall. This could change a lot of things, particularly club dues.

Just in time for spring planting for the farmers.... The hits keep coming for that industry.

This doesn’t work for everyone, especially those who love to turn dirt in plots like they are row cropping, but there are ways to cut a fertilizer budget that don’t really impact your plot success in many circumstances. Test your soil and see what it’s deficient in(and know that there is way more phosphorus present than most labs test for). So many plotters just use their same recipe of however many sacks of seed and X number of triple whatever. Get your pH right or closer to it. Lime is cheap and you should be doing that now or soon. It will maximize the availability of what’s already present. Adopt practices that allow you to build soil rather than dirt. Solid biological action and organic matter will greatly increase the holding capacity of a given parcel of land and slow the loss of most nutrients through leaching, erosion, etc.

Depends on how long the war goes on and how much the global supply is affected. If the strait of Hormuz open up today and natural gas flow goes back to normal we would see the forward nitrogen market start easing down. I personally think you will see a reset back this summer from where it is today. Not sure it will be as cheap as last fall but probably better than today. Now if some more crazy things happen that can change. You’re not going to see phosphate and potash double. Nitrogen and Sulfur are the 2 that have moved the most.

Liming of green fields when needed is certainly something that needs to be done.
The big problem now days is getting the lime spread on the fields. Years ago, this didn't seem too big a problem, but today it is a BIG problem if you have a lot of green fields over a large number of acres. Buying lime and renting a lime buggy is not a big problem if you need a lot, but getting someone to pull the buggy over a large lease is a BIG problem. We have 24 green fields on over 1800 acres. We have tried for several years to hire someone to pull the buggy, but no luck and even if we found someone, the cost would be so large. Now we are faced with fertilizer cost. Hopefully as already stated, the cost will come back to reason before this fall.
Again getting the PH right and spreading lime is something else. The last time we did, we put down about 2 tons per ac. The green fields for the next four years were GREAT!

Lov to lime - last year water bars too high - hope i can get hopper over them this year. Just got thru planting several apple trees and i put out mineral 6 weeks ago

I’ll come spread the lime for you. I do it every couple yr at my places and my tractor does fine. I also plant and bushhog for several land owners and hunting clubs.
