I’m going to start seriously looking for a newer Toyota once my ‘06 Highlander hits 500k. I’m at 490k now. I’m trying to decide between a RAV4 (2022?) and another Highlander (2019?). With putting 35+ thousand miles on a vehicle per year, I would love the fuel economy of the RAV4. I’m not pretending to be saving the environment; more money in my pocket means more guns and ammo. That said, the Highlander is going to be a much smoother ride and nicer interior. The V6 is bulletproof, but 22mpg puts me right where I have been bleeding gas money for 10 years. Either will pull my little Jonboat. Newer RAV4 has about the same space as my current vehicle. Either would be a step up from not having AC, power steering, having to add oil, terrible paint job, etc. I’m not opposed to a hybrid for either since Toyota has their crap together, but might have to go to an older model to stay in budget.
KBB says I might get $900 on a trade in, so not much help there nor much expected.

Hybrid in either. Toyota has that technology figured out and they last forever just like the non turbo older Toyotas.

I had an 04 Highlander that I drove to work for a while up to 180k miles. SisIL has a 22 rav4. Both my mother and MIL have/had that era highlanders, so I can speak from direct experience. The new rav4 are very comparable in size to your current ride but the newer rav4 feels more sporty and is more comfortable and quieter than the old highlander. The newer version of the Highlander is nothing like your version and is significantly larger and also more comfortable than the 22 rav. For what it’s worth, the 15&17 highlanders have a combined 300k with no major mechanical work required, but the 17 did require Both a ps pump and ac compressor under 125k miles. Nothing on the 22 rav4 in 70k. You just have to decide if mpg is greater than comfort to you.

The newer rav4s have gotten very sporty. I think they’re more off road capable than they used to be. The Highlander is more of a mom car to cart around kids. Just my opinion. My daily work driver is a Highlander ‘03 with 175k miles on it. Been a great car. I don’t know much about about the newer highlanders.

My buddy travels 2 hours everyday round trip for work. He has a sharp looking rav4 hybrid with maybe a leveling kit and lit bit larger all terrain tires. H said he gets 40 mpg. If I drove as far as he does, I’d have something like that

They are about 1-2" higher than a regular Rav , come with all terrain tires and some kind of trail mode . They're a neat little machine , BrentM has one , loves it. Haven't been in a highlander since 05 but my oldest daughter has a 19 Rav4 and it's a little cramped for my comfort.

We have a 2016 rav4 we bought new in August of 16.
Has 288079miles and climbing. Only thing we've done is replace valve cover gasket. It's been a great vehicle

Highlander for sure. We are on our third one. They get good gas mileage also.

We have a 19 highlander and it has been a good one so far. Awd will go anywhere as long as you don't bottom out and is great for the snow. It don't get much better mileage than either of our trucks. I'd go with the best gas mileage with that amount of seat time given both were equal in known problems.

so on the news the other day that Toyota is no longer the most reliable rated. suberoo is. So I guess the question is: forester or outback. besides rav 4 is going to hybrid only next year.

What does ALDEER say? I had a Rav4 rental, and I don't think the door panel had an effective arm rest. So it was a far cry from my Tundra in that regard.

We just switched from a Highlander to a Honda Pilot. Both are top line editions. Pilot has less road noise and drives better. Highlander was a 2023.

Highlander . Absolutely no comparison in the ride. Wife has a 2015 Highlander that’s been stellar. Mother in law has a 2024 RAV4 which rides rough and has less room.

We have a 2015 Highlander and it has been a great vehicle. Plenty of room. It's AWD and I never thought I would liked the AWD. I'll never buy another SUV without it. The only problem I've had with it is the radiator had a leak. It wasn't bad and I couldn't identify where it was at. I found it on the way to Mobile for a bowling tournament. We made it down there and back fine. I love my Toyota.
