My brother in law’s truck needs a new engine per the mechanic. The guy will only install new engines so he and my sister are looking for options. According to the 8 character being C, the engine is a 5.3L opt L83.
Any opinions on this engine and if it is one of the bad ones? Hate to replace it with a ticking time bomb.
Any suggestions on a reputable place to get a salvage engine in the Birmingham area?
What else do they need to look out for?
Final general comment for anybody reading this. When it rains it pours, and it is pouring on them right now and has been for the last 6-8 months. Everytime they turn around it’s a new multi-thousand dollar issue. Prepare for a rainy day so it doesn’t knock you on your back.

How many miles is on the truck? I would hate for them to put a new engine in it then turn around and replace the transmission a couple months later. I might know a guy that could get a motor from a salvage yard and install it. Sorry they are going through a tough time.

The 2006sh 5.3 in gm products were good. Pre AFM. I had one in my truck and I never had a problem.

I did Jasper with AFM deleted. So far so good.

I did Jasper with AFM deleted. So far so good. Did this with my 2008 Chevy. Worked great for 100 K miles until I sold the truck.

LKQ is where I bought mine. They will pull it for you. Frankies auto parts - Birmingham Knox auto parts - birmingham B and R also.
I would check around. I've had 2 replaced in the last 2 years. Different vehicles.

It’s got 180k on the truck but they just had the transmission done in the last year. LKQ is where I bought mine. They will pull it for you. More I think about it the more I am reluctant to tell her to get the same engine with the Active Fuel Management still running. She got a quote for $6700 foot a salvage motor with 100k miles on it. If Active Fuel Management is that bad, is it likely they’ll be in the same boat in a few more years?

Delete the afm and $6700 is to much for a used motor in my old tightwad opinion and what year model is the truck which would make a big difference on value of the truck when finished

I just paid $12,000 to replace my 2018 GMC Sierra 6.2L last summer, with a Jasper crate engine. It's been good for about 15,000 miles now and doesn't have the EPA crap on it. I'd probably do it again.

buying a used 100k motor for $6500 is like saying I want to continue to be on the multi thousand dollar cycle. yea that's what you call a junkyard motor. but yeah better to pay more and get the better half of the miles. I can understand the struggle, situations like these nowadays is why I now advocate buying new base models over fancy used.

Getting a re-man is not outrageous right now. Finding someone who can make it rock is another.

Seems like Jasper is the main name I hear for emanated engines. Does anybody have experience with Powertrain engines?

My transmission went out a couple weeks ago @180k and not wanting anything new trucks had to offer, I just went ahead and put a new jasper motor and transmission in mine.
I had another core engine laying around and I’ll use the one outta my truck in a Monte Carlo I’m about to build
