My 94 yo mother in law has been living with us now for 5+ years due to dementia. She had been totally bedridden those 5 years and had not eaten for the last 4 days due to not being able to swallow without asperating. She no longer knew how to swallow or drink from a straw. Hospice had told us to administer morphine about 3 to 4 weeks ago to just make her somewhat comfortable. In the last couple of weeks she had 4 to 5 seizures that would last 15 to 20 minutes, then seem to stabilize somewhat. When I got home from work last night I could really tell from her shallow breathing and her facial color that it would not be long now. My wife who is a RN- God love her- had been taking care of her all this time and refused to place her in a nursing home from the start home due to knowing just how bad of care patients get at most of those places.
Well, Mrs. Neeley earned her wings at 7:50 last night and is no longer suffering and is with her husband who passed away some 9 years ago.
My wife is a trooper to the highest degree. With her mom being at our house, we have no vacation or breaks during those 5 years. She came out of her mom's room and told me...she's gone, she just quit breathing, and started crying..I just held her tight for a few minutes and said I'm sorry but its all over with now and her mom is in no more pain.
I went in the room and shut her mom's eyes. After the hospice nurse showed up around 9pm , she had to contact the funeral home who sent two guys out to transport her body to the funeral home around 11pm. Our spare bedroom will look quite different now without the hospital bed in there.

That’s a tough row to hoe, but it sounds like you and your wife did an outstanding job. Mrs. Neely was blessed to have both of you. Being a full time caregiver is rough on the mind, body, and soul. But the daily reward is worth every ache.

Prayers for your family. My dad is taking care of my grandmother and hospice is saying any day now. She is 95.
