I climbed a 10 yesterday with assist from a pitch hopper. I don’t trust just the boots anything more than an 8

My wife took away my gutter cleaning license a couple of years ago. Unbelievable the stuff I pay for now. Maybe I can help you. I do that as well.

About 15-years ago I was working on the roof of an industrial plant about 100 or so feet up doing a grid alignment of wireless antenna dishes (mostly flat metal roof - static lines running across to anchor to, and a body harness tethered to the cable - there was absolutely NO WAY I could fall short of a failure of the static line, tether breaking, or harness failure). I walked to the edge, leaned over and took a picture and sent it to my son. He texted me back and asked how high I was up, when I told him he said would have a heart attack that high up. My response was - if you will climb 30' in a deer stand a 100' is not a lot of difference, IF you survive the 30' fall you will probably wish you didn't and at a 100' it gives you a few moments to get right with God before the sudden stop.
A number of years ago I was on a scissor lift about 30' or so up and the operator was walking around me causing the lift to sway. The first thing I wanted to do was get on my knees. The second thing I wanted to do was to stab him with my screwdriver.
The one thing I hated more than anything was being on a knuckle lift with pneumatic tires, even with the harness and all of the safety gear - the bouncing would make my heart rate go up, even with the outriggers.
At 61, I couldn't do any of those things today - the closer I get to the edge of a roof the more I want to get down on my hands and knees and crawl. The ridge of our roof is about 30' off the ground at its highest, if I get within about 10' of the edge I start getting REAL NERVOUS. I feel like that as I have aged if I'm put in high places I feel like I have vertigo - very uncomfortable and unstable.

You become not such such a daredevil after you break a few bones from falling. I know a little about that, unfortunately!

Had a neighbor who whacked off all the Azalea bushes in front of his house.
Then sometime later tried a roofing chore during which he fell and impaled
himself on about a 1" stub through the chest. Huge trauma scene and helo ride.
Tie yourself off !
Years later I caught him up on the same roof doing the same thing. Ya can't fix stupid.

Two good friends of mine are dead because of home ladder falls. Both were in their 60s, in good health, retired military. The fall didn't kill them but complications from the injuries. My next door neighbor fractured his skull in three places from a ladder fall. He's Ok but still has problems. I'll toss a $100 bill at someone faster than a sailor to a Panamanian hooker to do my gutters and such now.

Funny you post this thread. Just day before yesterday we were out at the beach. Where our beach access is, we have been watching them build this house and have enjoyed seeing it come together. Well. the day before yesterday I was making a beer run in the golf cart and see this Mexican worker putting on the metal roof and he's just on the edge with ZERO tie off. I just shook my head. I used to do construction work when I was a teenager for my Dad's construction company. We built houses. One day we were putting on tar paper on a 12/12 roof and I was walking on a toe board on the edge and the next thing I knew I had fallen 3 stories down into the excavation around the foundation. Fortunately for me I landed on a relatively soft pile of dirt. Completely knocked the breath out of me and I thought I was going to die. Fortunately nothing was broken, just a few abrasions. That was about 1975 and I will never forget it. I was extremely blessed not to be killed or permanently disabled. God was with me that day. My roof is 9/12 however I have a 4/12 porch around all but about 40 feet will not touch that 40’ section the other got a safety net, I’ m 66 and nailed on a bunch of shingles in my earlier days but that before we figured out about the foam

When I quit hunting I gave away all my climbing stuff to a member here. Think it was last year I saw a photo he posted of his son and he was using my old climbing stand. I knew if I kept it I'd be back out.
