had to get up on the roof today and re-caulk around a leaky vent pipe boot......man, those roofs sure have gotten higher and steeper than they were when I was in my 20's.

I did minor roofing/siding repair the summer after highschool. I'd get up on the roof of a 2-story house and sit on the side of the pitch on an old foam cushion and never gave it a second thought. Now it makes me a little dizzy.

I always referred to that as "Breadwinner Syndrome".

I never had a problem with heights. I mentioned to my Dr that climbing up 30’ and hanging off the side of a tree gave me a little anxiety now.
He said that feeling is called “ Wisdom “.

I've fell out of treestands 3 different times, due to 3 different things. That's why I have epilepsy now. Keeping your a$$ on the ground has benefits. All the stand accidents, were completely freak accidents. Never again.

Vent pipe boots are always failing. I have 3 on my small house, and I get about 8 or 9 years out of mine before it's time to replace. I worry about them all the time. After every hard rain I go around and look for water leaks with a flashlight.

I get wonkier with them every day. Going up isn't so bad. Coming down chews my knees up something fierce. At one time my lower back was causing leg numbness unexpectedly. One minute I'm fine, the next I'm walking like I've had a stroke. I'm a bit surprised I didn't fall then.

Ha. I will be 57 this year. My brain still thinks Im 30. Was up on a ladder the other day cutting a large branch with a pole saw. Probably done it 500 times on the last 30 years. Shit went bad, got knocked off the ladder and branch hit me in the back. First time that has ever happened to me. Bruised and sore but it could have been a lot worse. Im gonna leave that to my young bucks from now on.

Tell me about it. I had to do the same thing back in October. Took me a few minutes to get up the nerve to step off the ladder onto the roof and to step back onto the ladder when I was finished. Ain’t no joke with my fake knees.

If I ever build a house my goal is zero roof penetrations.

Also a shallow pitch roof I think looks better and makes getting on the roof easier.

My roof is two story on a 6/12 pitch
Used to walk top plank etc… 40 years ago. I can’t get on my roof any more. Too dang sketchy for my old butt

Hell with a roof. I’ll climb 25ft with a climber but at 59, I’ll never get back on a roof. I got up on ours last year looking for the dryer vent. That’s all it took.

I'm fine on a 6/12 and less. 8/12 is ok with pitch hopper or a GOAT device. 10 and up, I send my employee. I have trouble, now, transitioning from ladder to roof over a 6/12.

Love a low slope roof.

We built this one with a metal roof, dryer vent on an outside wall and zero roof penetrations.

Very happy with those decisions.

Where does the vent stack terminate?
