The Strait is only 30 miles wide. The actual shipping channel much smaller. A surface-to-surface missile travels close to 700 mph. Any escort would have less than a minute to detect, coordinate, lock, and fire before it reached the vessel. Send multiple STS's and the chances of one or more reaching their target is fairly high. Can't believe securing the Hormuz Strait was not a high priority when planning the initial attacks.
I agree. Perhaps Oman wouldn't let the US put some sort of SAM batteries out on the point . It's a very strategic location, not much could get by us there.
